A method of processing blood establishes communication between a donor and a blood flow path and pumps whole blood from the donor into a container through the blood flow path. The method centrifugally separates the whole blood in the container into concentrated red blood cells and a plasma constituent. After the method interrupts communication between the donor and the blood flow path, the method pumps the concentrated red blood cells from the container to mix the concentrated red blood cells with a nutritive solution to restore the hematocrit of the concentrated red blood cells to a desired value. The method also removes the plasma constituent.

Centrifugation pheresis method

A system and method of separation of therapeutic components from blood. The system includes a dual member centrifuge and a disposable single use fluid transfer set. The set includes an elongated flexible separation chamber having an input port, a separated component output port and a residual fluid output port. The input port and the separated component output ports are located at opposite ends of the elongated separation chamber. The centrifuge includes a receiving chamber with a selectively formed annular slot therein. The separation chamber is positioned in the annularly shaped slot and rotated at a predetermined rotational velocity. Fluids such as whole blood flows through the separation chamber and are separated into various therapeutic components such as platelet rich plasma and residual concentrated red blood cells. Platelet rich plasma can be drawn off as the separated therapeutic component. An alternate two part transfer set provides for highly efficient platelet pheresis. The platelet rich plasma is separated from the residual red blood cells in a first part. The platelet rich plasma flows into the second part and is separated into platelet poor plasma and platelets. The platelet poor plasma can be drawn off and returned to a donor or collected. The platelet concentrate can then be accumulated in a separate container.

A disinfection apparatus including a container; a cap having an article-retaining means, a sealing means and a catalytic element-retaining means affixed thereto; and a catalytic element. The disinfection apparatus has particular utility in the disinfection of contact lenses with hydrogen peroxide solutions. Also disclosed are venting and sealing components, catalytic elements, molded article-retaining assemblies, and catalytic element formation methods.

Catalytic element for disinfection apparatus

An aseptic/sterile fluid connection between two containers is formed by radio frequency sealing together portions of transfer regions of two containers. Each transfer region has a layer of a relatively high melt temperature material such as a rubber or elastomer positioned between two outer container walls made of a flexible thermoplastic, for example polyvinyl chloride. The transfer regions are placed in registry, and the radio frequency welding fuses together portions of adjacent container outer walls and forms a fluid opening therethrough.

Methods of separating selected blood components separate blood by centrifugation in a rotating chamber into a first separated blood component, a residual blood fluid, and an interface between the first separated blood component and the residual blood fluid. The methods withdraw the first separated blood component out of the rotating chamber through a first outlet port, and withdraw the residual blood fluid out of the rotating chamber through a second outlet port. During the separation step, the methods accumulate a second separated blood component in the interface without withdrawal from the rotating chamber by controlling the position of the interface within the rotating chamber at a location spaced away from flow communication with both the first and second outlet ports. The methods terminate the withdrawing steps either when a desired volume of the second separated blood component has accumulated in the location or after a selected time period, and shift the location of the interface within the rotating chamber into flow communication with one of the first and second outlet ports. The methods withdraw the second separated blood component from the rotating chamber through the one outlet port.

Methods of accumulating separated blood components in a rotating chamber

A method separates blood by centrifugation in a rotating chamber into a first separated blood component, a residual blood fluid, and an interface between the first separated blood component and the residual blood fluid. The method withdraws the first separated blood component out of the rotating chamber through a first outlet port, and also withdraws the residual blood fluid out of the rotating chamber through a second outlet port. During the separating step, the method accumulates a second separated blood component in the interface without withdrawal from the rotating chamber by monitoring the location of the interface within the rotating chamber and maintaining the interface at a location spaced away from flow communication with both the first and second outlet pods. After a selected time period, the method shifts the location of the interface within the rotating chamber into flow communication with a selected outlet port and withdraws the second separated blood component from the rotating chamber through the selected outlet port.

Method for collecting a blood component concentration

An apparatus is disclosed for guiding a medical instrument to a predetermined target location within the periurethral tissues of a patient. The apparatus directs the instrument along a predetermined path with respect to the patient's urethra and limits penetration of the instrument to a predetermined depth. The disclosed embodiment comprises an apparatus for implanting inflatable prostheses within the periurethral tissues to coapt the urethra and thereby manage incontinence. A method for effecting coaptation of a urethra of a patient is also disclosed. According to this method, a pair of working channels are formed within the periurethral tissues, and an inflatable prosthesis is introduced into each working channel. The prostheses are inflated only after both working channels have been formed, and preferably after both prostheses have been positioned within their respective working channels. The inflated prostheses confront the urethra and effect coaptation of the urethra.

An umbilicus conveys fluid between a stationary body and a rotating body in a small, compact operating environment. The umbilicus comprises an elongated body including a proximal end, a distal end, and a middle region between the proximal and distal ends. A first support block is attached to the proximal end. A second support block is attached to the distal end. The first support block includes a strain relief sleeve. The umbilicus is otherwise free of any other strain relief sleeve. A thrust bearing member in the middle region spaced apart from the strain relief sleeve and the distal end. The umbilicus is otherwise free of any other thrust bearing member. The thrust bearing member has an inner annular body, an outer annular body about the inner annular body, and an array of ball bearings between the inner and outer annular bodies. The ball bearings support the inner annular body for rotation relative to the outer annular body.

An apparatus and method are disclosed for injecting a viscous material into periurethral tissues as a treatment for urinary incontinence. The apparatus comprises a non-coring needle mounted to the forward end of a catheter. A hub with a luer adapter is fitted to the rearward end of the catheter. To provide the physician with a readily visible indicator of the orientation of the needle orifice, the catheter has a stripe running longitudinally on the catheter in predetermined angular relationship with the needle orifice. Further, the needle hub also has indicia located thereon in predetermined angular relationship with the needle orifice. Thus the physician can ascertain the orientation of the needle orifice through the cystoscope by observing the location of the stripe, or he can determine the orientation of the needle orifice externally by observing the indicia on the needle hub. The physician can therefore maneuver the catheter/needle assembly while noting the angular location of the stripe or hub indicia to position the needle orifice at the optimum orientation for injecting the viscous material.

An inflatable prosthesis is disclosed which comprises a structural member having a bore dimensioned to receive a needle formed in its back end. An elastomeric balloon has a back end in sealing engagement with the structural member and has a front end extending beyond the front end of the structural member such that a portion of the structural member is contained within the balloon. A port is defined in the structural member for placing the bore in fluid communication with a port location exterior of the structural member which is contained within the balloon, whereby fluid infused into the bore passes through the port and into a space between the balloon and the exterior surface of the structural member to inflate the balloon. An elastomeric member has one portion attached to the structural member and another portion attached to the front end of the balloon so as to partially constrain axial expansion of the prosthesis as the balloon is inflated.
