Seated abrasive articles containing particles having specified shapes. The coated abrasive comprises: a. a backing; b. at least one binder; c. an abrasive coating comprising shaped abrasive particles and diluent particles said at least one binder serving to bond the abrasive coating to the backing. The diluent particles can comprise (1) a plurality of individual abrasive particles bonded together by an adhesive to form an agglomerate, (2) a plurality of individual non-abrasive particles bonded together by an adhesive to form an agglomerate, (3) a plurality of individual abrasive particles and a plurality of individual non-abrasive particles bonded together by an adhesive to form an agglomerate, (4) individual non-abrasive particles, (5) individual abrasive particles, or (6) combinations of the foregoing.

Coated abrasive article having diluent particles and shaped abrasive

Coated abrasive articles containing particles having specified shapes. The coated abrasive article comprises: a. a backing; b. at least one binder; c. an abrasive coating comprising shaped abrasive particles and diluent particles said at least one binder serving to bond the abrasive coating to the backing. A coated abrasive product comprising a backing bearing on at least one major surface thereof a make coat, a multiplicity of erodable agglomerates comprising a resinous binder and at least one inorganic filler material adhered to said make coat, a multiplicity of individual premium abrasive grains adhered to said make coat and disposed between said erodable agglomerates, a multiplicity of individual premium abrasive grains overlying said erodable agglomerates, and a size coat overlying said individual premium abrasive grains, said erodable agglomerates, and said make coat. The coated abrasive products of this invention abrade faster and endure longer than coated abrasive products using individual conventional abrasive grains in place of erodable agglomerates.

Replacement of all or most of the coarse mineral in a coated abrasive product by a superior (and typically more expensive) mineral improves abrading performance significantly more than would be predicted. In some cases the performance is superior to that of products made with either mineral alone. Typically 5% to 30% of the total mineral weight is made up of the superior mineral.

Improved granular abrasive material comprises silicon carbide particles at least partially coated with an integral, durable surface layer of a hard refractory material comprising metal nitride or carbide. Hard refractory materials which provide a useful coating include, for example, silicon nitride or carbide, titanium nitride or carbide, sialon, and others. The surface layer is preferably provided by chemical vapor deposition, most preferably utilizing a fluidized bed. The improved granular abrasive material is particularly useful in various abrasive products such as coated abrasive products, nonwoven abrasive products and abrasive grinding wheels.
