A multifilament thermoplastic yarn and process for the formation thereof which, when tufted or woven into a fabric, presents a grass-like appearance. The yarn is made by melt spinning and water quenching a melt-spinnable synthetic organic thermoplastic polymer, such as polypropylene, drawing the filaments, surface heating at least a portion of the thus drawn filaments, cooling the thus surface heated filaments and reheating the thus cooled filaments either before or after tufting, weaving or otherwise processing into a fabric to develop latent crimp in the yarn. Also disclosed is a carpet fabric employing the yarn and exhibiting grass-like appearance with exceptional cover and relatively soft hand.

Method for producing multifilament thermoplastic yarn having latent crimp

A bulked and entangled multifilament thermoplastic yarn and an improved process for the formation thereof which, when tufted into a fabric, presents a grass-like appearance. The yarn is made by melt spinning and water quenching filaments of a melt spinnable synthetic organic thermoplastic polymer, such as polypropylene, in a continuous process, drawing the filaments, imparting bulk and entanglement in a fluid jet entangling mechanism and taking up the thus entangled yarn on a yarn winder. Also disclosed is an improved fluid jet entangling mechanism employed in the process.

A straightened, textured yarn is produced employing an apparatus comprising a crimping means, an entangling means and a heating and tensioning means which heats and applies tension to the crimped and entangled yarn prior to packaging.

Yarn processing apparatus

A continuous synthetic filament yarn is processed by crimping, entangling, and straightening the yarn. The yarn is straightened by heating under tension, resulting in a yarn that can be used in its straightened form and later bulked by a subsequent process such as dyeing, boiling, heating, etc. The length of a yarn plug formed by crimping is controlled by controlling the temperature of the yarn.

Method and apparatus for controlling yarn plug length

Yarn is passed to a texturing zone wherein a yarn wad is formed, and the yarn wad is then passed through a flexible sleeve in a restraining zone wherein the yarn wad is restrained by a plurality of individual stacked members. In addition an apparatus is provided useful in the method of the invention.
