High activity catalyst component for olefin polymerization comprises reaction product of Group IVB-VB metal-containing component with product prepared by reaction of components comprising magnesium alcoholate and halocarboxylic acid, provided that when such components contain less than an effective amount of halogen, reaction product is reacted with halogenating agent. Magnesium alcoholate-halocarboxylic acid reaction product can be obtained in hydrocarbon-soluble or -insoluble form such that catalyst component preparation involves a liquid-liquid or liquid-solid system as desired. Catalysts comprising the above-described component and organometallic promoter are sufficiently active to eliminate need for removal of catalyst residues from polyolefins produced in the presence thereof.

Olefin polymerization catalyst

A novel catalyst component and process for polymerization of ethylene or an ethylene containing mixture with a terminal olefin which consists essentially of contacting under polymerizing conditions said ethylene or mixture with (a) the reaction product of a Group IVB, Group VB or Group VIB transition metal compound and an organotin compound containing at least one reactive OH group and, (b) an organometallic compound.

Catalyst and process for the polymerization of ethylene and terminal

A high activity catalyst component, useful in polymerizing ethylene and mixtures of ethylene and terminal olefins having eight or fewer carbon atoms, is prepared by reacting a Group II metal hydroxide with antimony pentachloride followed by reactions with a Group IVB or VB transition metal compound and an aluminum halide.

The particle size of as formed polyethylene or ethylene copolymer containing up to about fifteen percent of a C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 olefin, which is made using a promoted solid catalyst component prepared from a magnesium alkoxide, a titanium (IV) alkoxide and an alkylaluminum dichloride, is increased by adding the dichloride in at least two stages and allowing the preparation mixture to age between stages during the preparation of said catalyst component. The particle size of polymer can be increased substantially using the so treated catalyst component, compared to the particle size of polymer made using untreated catalyst component, when either catalyst component is employed together with an alkylaluminum compound promoter in a slurry or vapor phase process at moderate polymerization temperature and pressure.

Increasing the particle size of as formed polyethylene or ethylene

Adding a finely divided oxide to a terminal olefin polymerization catalyst comprising a hydrocarbon-soluble transition metal compound and a Group II or III metal organic compound reduces the amount of fibrous polymer produced.
