An optical combiner, configured for use in a mixed-reality display system that combines holographic and real-world images, includes an assembly of see-through waveguides that are arranged in a stack to provide full color holographic images from constituent RGB (red, green, and blue) color components received from a holographic image source. Each waveguide&#x2014;one per RGB color component&#x2014;includes an in-coupling DOE (diffractive optical element), an intermediate DOE, and an out-coupling DOE that are disposed on internal surfaces of the stacked waveguides in the optical combiner. Each of the out-coupling DOEs incorporates a diffractive lens functionality to render the out-coupled holographic images at a set depth on the mixed-reality display. In an illustrative non-limiting example, the out-coupling DOE may provide a half diopter of negative lens power to set the optical focus of the holographic images at 1.33 m.

Waveguide assembly with virtual image focus

The disclosed technology provides an electronic device including an eyepiece and a wireless charging coil forming at least one loop around the eyepiece. The charging coil is coupled to a rechargeable battery and adapted to inductively charge the rechargeable battery when the electronic device is positioned such that the wireless charging coil is within a magnetic field generated by a wireless charging source.

A near-eye display device includes an image source, a waveguide, and a controller. The waveguide is configured to propagate light received the image source to a user of the near-eye display device, and includes a holographic grating comprising a plurality of angularly multiplexed holograms. The controller is configured to control display of an image via the image source.

Multiplexed hologram tiling in a waveguide display

Display systems with a single plate optical waveguide and independently adjustable micro display arrays and related methods are provided. A method includes coupling: a first light portion received from the first micro display array to a first input grating region of the optical waveguide, a second light portion received from the second micro display array to a second input grating region of the optical waveguide, and a third light portion received from the third micro display array to a third input grating region of the optical waveguide. The method further includes directing: a first diffracted portion of the first light portion to a first expansion grating, a second diffracted portion of the second light portion to a second expansion grating, and a third diffracted portion of the third light portion to a third expansion grating. The method further includes using a single output grating outputting combined light.

Display system with a single plate optical waveguide and independently adjustable micro display arrays

An optical system that deploys micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) scanners to contemporaneously generate CG images and to scan a terrain of a real-world environment. An illumination engine emits a first spectral bandwidth and a second spectral bandwidth into an optical assembly along a common optical path. The optical assembly then separates the spectral bandwidth by directing the first spectral bandwidth onto an image-generation optical path and the second spectral bandwidth onto a terrain-mapping optical path. The optical system deploys the MEMS scanners to generate CG images by directing the first spectral bandwidth within the image-generation optical path and also to irradiate a terrain by directing the second spectral bandwidth within the terrain-mapping optical path. Accordingly, the disclosed system provides substantial reductions in both weight and cost for systems such as, for example, augmented reality and virtual reality systems.

Compact optical system with MEMS scanners for image generation and object tracking

MicroLED arrays offer a small form factor solution for the HMD image sources since they do not need a separate illumination optics. Features of the present disclosure implement a MicroLED display system that incorporate a plurality of monochrome projectors (e.g., three MicroLED projectors) to generate three monochrome images (e.g., red, blue, and green images) that are separately input into a single waveguide of the HMD and combined to form an image that is displayed to the user. By utilizing a single waveguide that includes a plurality of spatially separated input regions (e.g., a region for inputting blue light, a region for inputting red light, a region for inputting green light), the MicroLED display system of the present disclosure may reduce the form factor of the HMD device because of the reduced number of plates that may be required to combine the three monochrome images.

Examples are disclosed that relate to scanning optical systems. One example provides an optical system comprising an illumination source configured to emit light, a first scanning stage configured to receive the light and to scan the light, and a second scanning stage configured to receive and direct the light from the first scanning stage toward a projected exit pupil.

One embodiment provides a computing device comprising a computing device body, a display coupled with the computing device body, a first set of computing components incorporated into the computing device body, and a securing system configured to secure the body to a wrist, the securing system comprising a plurality of detachable modular segments joined together to form a second set of computing components that is modifiable by changing segments. Each modular segment comprises a first mechanical connector and a second mechanical connector, a first set of electrical connectors and a second set of electrical connectors, and one or more electrical components incorporated into the modular segment, such that a functionality of the computing device is modifiable by changing modular segments.

Wearable computing systems

An optical system comprises a linear illumination source configured to emit light, a first scanning stage configured to receive the light and to scan the light, and a second scanning stage. The linear illumination source is configured to generate light forming a vertical field of view based on the one or more output signals received from a controller modulating the one or more output signals comprising image data defining content. The first scanning stage redirects portions of the light to generate an output defining a horizontal field of view based on the one or more output signals of the controller. The first scanning device combines the vertical field of view and the horizontal field of view in the output light to create a two-dimensional light image of the content. The second scanning stage receives and directs the output of the first scanning stage toward a projected exit pupil.

Enhanced imaging system for linear micro-displays

Disclosed optical mounts are resistant to the various stresses that may be experienced by optical display devices. An optical mount is provided with mechanical compliance and resiliency. Such mechanical compliance and resiliency associated with the disclosed optical mounts are intended to absorb thermal and/or mechanical stresses, while protecting and preserving the operational functionality of optical waveguides coupled to the disclosed optical mounts.

Technology is described for reducing display update time for a near-eye display (NED) device. A point of focus in the NED field of view is identified, often based on natural user input data. A communication module of a computer system communicatively coupled to the NED device transmits lossless priority data, an example of which is user focal region image data, using one or more communication techniques for satisfying lossless transmission criteria. Allowed loss image data is identified based at least in part on its distance vector from a point of focus in the display field of view. An example of allowed loss image data is image data to be displayed outside the user focal region. The allowed loss image data is transmitted and extracted from received image data allowing for lossy transmission.

Display update time reduction for a near-eye display

In embodiments of waveguide optics focus elements, an imaging structure includes a waveguide for viewing of an environment that is viewable with the imaging structure. The waveguide transmits light of a virtual image that is generated to appear as part of the environment for augmented-reality imaging or virtual-reality imaging. The imaging structure also includes one or more focus elements that are integrated in the waveguide and switchable to focus the virtual image at a focus depth that approximately correlates to a focal distance of the environment. The focus elements can each be implemented for a different focus depth of the virtual image, and the focus depth is adjustable based on a combination of the focus elements being switched-on or switched-off.

A near-to-eye display (NED) device comprises a light sensor, a processor, a first imager to generate a left image of an object for the user's left optical sensor, and a second imager to generate a right image of the object for the user's right optical sensor. The device further comprises at least one light-transmissive optical component arranged to receive concurrently the left image and the right image, the at least one light-transmissive optical component further arranged to direct a first portion of each of the left and right images to the left and right optical sensors, respectively, of the user while directing a second portion of each of the left and right images to the light sensor. The at least one processor detects a binocular misalignment between the left and right images based on output of the light sensor and to control the imagers to correct for the misalignment.
