A biopsy device comprises a probe assembly and an obturator. The probe assembly comprises a cannula having a closed distal end configured to penetrate tissue, an open proximal end, a first lumen in fluid communication with the open proximal end, and a side aperture located proximal to the closed distal end. The side aperture is in fluid communication with the first lumen. The obturator is removably insertable in the first lumen through the open proximal end. The obturator is configured to substantially block the side aperture when the obturator is inserted in the first lumen. The probe assembly may be inserted in a patient's tissue (e.g., breast) with the obturator disposed in the cannula to block the side aperture. The obturator may then be removed, and a cutter may be advanced through the cannula to sever tissue protruding through the side aperture.

A localization mechanism, or fixture, is used in conjunction with a breast coil for breast compression and for guiding a core biopsy instrument during prone stereotactic biopsy procedures in both open and closed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines. The localization fixture includes a fiducial marker and three-dimensional Cartesian positionable guide for supporting and orienting an MRI-compatible biopsy instrument with detachable probe/thumb wheel probe to the biopsy site of suspicious tissues or lesions.

A fluid collection apparatus is provided for controlling fluid communication between a vacuum source and first and second vacuum lines of a surgical device such as a core sampling biopsy device. The fluid collection apparatus comprises first and second fluid lines adapted for detachably connecting to, and in fluid communication with, the first and second vacuum lines, respectively, of the surgical device. The fluid collection apparatus further comprises first and second valves in fluid communication with first and second fluid lines, respectively. Each of first and second valves has an open position and a closed position. The fluid collection apparatus further comprises an air vent selectively communicating with first and second vacuum lines, and a valve frame for fixing first and second valves relative to each other, where the valve frame has a latching means for detachably connecting the valve frame to the surgical device.
