An inflator assembly may include an inflator housing and an initiator attached to the inflator housing. A varistor may be associated with the initiator and may be spaced apart from a surface of the inflator housing to define a first spark gap between the varistor and the surface of the inflator housing.

Protection system for use with airbag inflators and initiators

An actuator device for actuating a supply of gas generant material in an airbag inflator device. The actuator includes an initiator cup having a cup side wall, an end wall at a first end of the cup side wall, and a cup open end at a second end of the cup side wall opposite the end wall. A header body is connected to the initiator cup at the second end of the cup side wall. The header body and the initiator cup define a storage chamber. A radial discharge charge holder is disposed within the storage chamber and adjacent the header body. The charge holder includes a charge holder side wall substantially parallel to at least a portion of the cup side wall, a charge holder open end disposed toward the initiator cup end wall, and at least one discharge opening disposed in the charge holder side wall. The actuator device includes an inner canister with at least a portion of the inner canister disposed over the charge holder open end to define a charge holder chamber. A first reactive charge is disposed within the charge holder chamber, and a second reactive charge including a fluid or a gel is disposed within the storage chamber between the inner canister and the initiator cup end wall.

An initiator for an inflator of an automotive airbag restraint system includes a housing and a wall dividing the housing into two parts, one for housing a firing element of the initiator, and one for receiving at least one application specific integrated circuit which performs functions of a portion of an electronic control unit. A mounting element is located in the second part of the housing, and at least one application specific integrated circuit is carried by the mounting element. The mounting element and two or more application specific integrated circuits may be provided as a package, in which at least two application specific integrated circuits are mounted in a stacked condition to form an application specific integrated circuit stack. The application specific integrated circuits are configured such that predetermined electrical circuit locations of adjacent ones of the application specific integrated circuits to be interconnected are aligned. The package includes connectors for electrically interconnecting these predetermined electrical circuit locations in adjacent ones of the application specific integrated circuits in the stack.

A resistant initiator for an automobile passenger restraint system which includes a shell casing having an upper chamber and a lower chamber. Contact pins connect the initiator to a mating electrical connector of a vehicle. A metal oxide varistor disposed in the shell casing provides electrostatic discharge and EMI/RFI rotection for the initiator. A glass to metal seal header is formed in the shell casing and includes an integrated circuit for igniting the pyrotechnic material disposed in a charge holder attached to the shell casing.

An initiator with electrostatic discharge protection includes a generally cup-shaped housing having an open end, a quantity of pyrotechnic material in the housing, and a seal for closing the housing open end and encapsulating the pyrotechnic material within the housing. A pair of electrodes in contact with the pyrotechnic material extend through the seal. A zener diode is coupled in electrical circuit between the housing and one of the electrodes to provide a path for electrostatic discharge and to prevent electrostatic discharge from affecting the pyrotechnic material.

An inflator socket pin collar which includes integral electrostatic discharge protection for an initiator of an air bag inflator. The collar includes a body having first and second opposed ends. An upper chamber is disposed in the first end and a lower chamber disposed in the second end. The second chamber is capable of receiving the electrical connector of the vehicle. An insert is located in the first chamber. The insert includes a pair of socket pins for connecting the initiator to an electrical connector of a vehicle. A metal oxide varistor is disposed in the insert for protecting the initiator from electrostatic discharge. The initiator is supported by the collar and pins of the initiator mate with the socket pins of the insert.
