A portable system for managing the temperature of a patient during transport includes a heater/cooler configured to be in fluid communication with a heat transfer catheter or a heat transfer surface pad; a pump for circulating heat exchange fluid; an alternating current power supply; and a processor configured to indicate if the alternating current power supply connection to the source of alternating current is interrupted. A rechargeable battery may be configured to provide power to the system when the alternating power supply is not connected to a source of alternating current. If the system is powered on and the connection to the alternating current source is interrupted, the system may automatically switch to receiving power from the rechargeable battery. The processor may alert an operator of the interruption of the connection to the alternating current source and indicate to the operator the amount of energy remaining in the battery.

Transport battery for use with portable thermal management system

An intelligent rechargeable battery pack having a battery management system for monitoring and controlling the charging and discharging of the battery pack is described. The battery management system includes primary and secondary protection circuits for monitoring the charging and discharging of the battery. Individual battery cells forming the battery pack are connected by a main bus to a connector for connection to a battery charger or a device to be powered, and the main bus may be interrupted by a switch controlled by the battery management system to prevent damage to the battery during charging or discharging of the battery.

A boost converter for driving the gate of n-channel MOSFET power devices is described. The boost converter includes a monitoring circuit and a kick start circuit to quickly bring the boost converter online when required to drive the MOSFET on.

A circuit for controlling a silicon-controlled rectifier includes a high breakdown voltage metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) connected to drive the gate of the silicon-controlled rectifier. The high breakdown voltage MOSFET is itself controlled by a gate voltage. The power requirements for the gate trigger circuit of a series string silicon-controlled rectifier are greatly reduced by using the high breakdown voltage MOSFET as a gate triggering circuit for the silicon-controlled rectifier. Because the MOSFET consumes little power, a limited power source, such as a snubber capacitor voltage that is developed during the OFF-state of the silicon-controlled rectifier, can be used to power the gate trigger circuit.

Low power gate trigger circuit for controlling a silicon-controlled rectifier circuit

An apparatus for isolating driver circuits from silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) circuits in an electric switch. The driver circuits are located on a driver-board, which includes an infrared (IR) emitter. The SCR circuits are located on a SCR switch-board, which includes an IR receiver. An insulating body is positioned between the driver-board and the switch-board. The insulating body encloses a light-pipe to optically link the infrared emitter to the infrared detector. Control signals can be communicated from the driver circuits to the SCR circuits via the IR emitter, the light-pipe, and the IR receiver.

Apparatus and method for isolating a trigger circuit of a silicon-controlled rectifier

A circuit that includes a silicon-controlled rectifier and a silicon-controlled rectifier gate trigger circuit connected to the silicon-controlled rectifier. A snubber capacitor is connected to the silicon-controlled rectifier and the silicon-controlled rectifier gate trigger circuit. The snubber capacitor generates a snubber capacitor voltage during an off state of the silicon-controlled rectifier. The snubber capacitor voltage thus developed is then used to power the silicon-controlled rectifier gate trigger circuit. The circuit also includes a resister-zener diode circuit connected to the snubber capacitor and an auxiliary capacitor. The auxiliary capacitor is charged through the resister-zener diode circuit by the snubber capacitor voltage. A voltage regulator is connected between the auxiliary capacitor and the silicon-controlled rectifier gate trigger circuit for providing a regulated voltage.

Apparatus and method for utilizing a snubber capacitor to power a silicon-controlled rectifier gate trigger circuit

A laminated bus assembly including a high power coupler to provide a low impedance, low noise laminated bus assembly for a switched converter that includes a plurality of switch pairs to convert between an AC power line and a DC device. The laminated bus assembly includes a first conductive layer, a second conductive layer, and a third conductive layer. A dielectric layer is laminated between each of the first, second, and third planes. The high power coupler includes a bushing positioned within the laminated assembly, including an engageable section for engaging with one of the conductive layers. A passage hole including an insulator ring is formed in intermediate conductive planes for passage of the bushing. A circuit layout includes a plurality of electrical connections between the switches, the AC, -DC and +DC bar conductors, and the DC device.

Laminated bus assembly and coupling apparatus for a high power

A low impedance, low noise laminated bus assembly for a high power switched converter that has a plurality of switch pairs including a -DC switch and a +DC switch for high speed switching to convert between an AC power line and a DC power storage device such as capacitors. The laminated bus assembly includes a first conductor plane having a plurality of AC bar conductors for each phase of AC power, a second conductor plane including a -DC bar conductor, and a third conductor plane including a +DC bar conductor. A dielectric layer is laminated between the first, second, and third planes. The circuit layout includes a plurality of electrical connections between the switches, the AC, -DC and +DC bar conductors, and the DC power storage device. Some of the electrical connections require that a coupling conductor pass through another bar conductor, which must therefore be insulated from the coupling conductor. Each bar conductor therefore has at least one insulated hole that includes an annular insulator through which the coupling conductor, which is a bushing, is inserted.

High power laminated bus assembly for an electrical switching converter

A low impedance, high power bus for conduction of electrical power with reduced transient signal effects is described herein. The high power bus can be applied as a high power supply bus between a constant voltage source and a plurality of switching cells positioning at varying locations along the bus, and as branch bus for the switching cells. The power bus can transmit high power: large currents in the hundreds or thousands of amperes, and large voltage potentials in the hundreds or thousands of volts. Particularly, the power bus has use in a DC-to-AC inverter that converts DC from a constant voltage source into three-phase AC for delivery to an electrical power grid. The high power bus includes two conductive bars positioned so that the current flow therethrough is balanced (equal and opposing), and the magnetic field is substantially confined between the bars. The bus includes a dielectric positioned between the conductive bars. In a preferred embodiment, the AC is conducted on extension bars that extend along the power supply bus, so that a main bus is created by the combination of the AC extension bars and the DC power supply bus, and the sum of the currents in the bars is approximately zero at all locations in the bus. The power bus lessens or even obviates the need for the snubber networks commonly used to reduce transients, and reduces the strength of magnetic fields and electric fields that could otherwise interfere with neighboring electrical components.
