An apparatus includes a first terminal configured to be coupled to a substation around mat for a substation and a second terminal configured to be coupled to a safety around mat for a piece of electrical equipment powered by the substation. The system further includes at least one voltage-dependent resistance device, such as at least one metal oxide varistor (MOV) configured to be coupled between the first and second terminals. At least one circuit interruption device, such as a fuse and/or a disconnect switch may be coupled in series with the at least one voltage-dependent resistance device.

Ground mat coupling systems and methods

A common mode line-to-ground filter is disclosed which includes but is not limited to a resistor, capacitor and a ground. The common mode line to ground filter is connected on a high side of a step-up transformer. A low side of the step-up transformer is connected to a variable frequency drive that provides a semi-sinusoidal voltage waveform. The common mode line to ground filter generates a filtered sinusoidal waveform from the output of the step-up transformer. The filtered sinusoidal voltage waveform is supplied via an electrical cable to an electrically submersible pump deployed downhole.

A system includes a first power source and a variable neutral impedance circuit configured to vary a neutral impedance of the first power source based on presence and absence of a parallel coupling of the first power source with a second power source. The variable neutral impedance circuit may be configured to reduce a neutral current of the first power source when the first power source is operating in parallel with the second power source. The variable neutral impedance circuit may include an impedance coupled in series with the first power source, a bypass switch configured to bypass the impedance and a control circuit configured to control the bypass switch. The impedance may include a resistor.

A normally ungrounded power system for a oil well is provided which includes a power transformer above ground and a pump motor below ground. There is provided a signal system which includes a below ground sensor system and an above ground signal conditioning and monitoring unit where the sensor system utilizes the main power lines for carrying the sensor signals. A connectable high resistance grounding scheme is provided to the aforementioned floating system, so that in the event of a arcing ground fault or similar occurrence the system may be immediately grounded, thus compensating for the effects of the arcing ground fault and providing personnel safety and electrical equipment protection. When the high resistance grounding system is not utilized the aforementioned signals from the sensors are easily carried by the power conductors.

High resistance grounding systems for oil well electrical systems

A grounding arrangement for a normally ungrounded multi-phase powerline system, which also carries dc information signals. A resistance and a spark gap device are provided in a path between system neutral and a ground. Upon the occurrence of a predetermined fault condition the spark gap device will conduct, and if the voltage developed across the resistance is of a predetermined value, a current bypass path is established around the spark gap device after a predetermined time delay.
