An improved golf driver club head wherein each driver club head has a tensioning device, which places the peripheral/outer structure of the club head in compression; thereby, resulting in a stronger, more rigid club head structure. In the preferred embodiment, the tensioning device comprises an elongated cylindrical member having respective end members. The top and bottom surfaces of the golf club head are each provided with a cylindrical depression or recess and an aperture or passage at the lower end of the depression. The passages are just large enough to accommodate the tensioning device, but are too small to pass the respective end members. During club head manufacture, the length of the device is selected to apply a compressive force between the head surfaces. Fine adjustment is accommodated by a threaded end member. The actual compression force may be selected to yield the best performance depending on the geometry, structure and material of the club head.

An improved set of golf club irons wherein each golf club iron club head has a structure for redistributing weight of the club head towards the perimeter thereof particularly in the rear cavity region. This is accomplished by enlarging the rear cavity surface, creating an undercut between said rear cavity surface and cavity perimeter further redistributing available weight toward the club head perimeter. In addition, the club head face thickness is reduced between the rear cavity surface and hitting surface allowing additional weight to be redistributed to the club head perimeter resulting in a larger thin faced cavity. The large thin faced cavity is reinforced by means of a lightweight web-like structure comprised of thin lightweight buttresses which protrude outward from the center of the cavity and intersect with the undercut and perimeter of the cavity. The buttresses taper from their narrowest diameter at their intersection with the cavity surface to a greater diameter at their non-intersecting outer surface and the buttresses greatest diameter is at the point where the buttress intersects with the perimeter of the cavity. The lightweight web-like structure is comprised of tapered buttresses which intersect with the rear cavity surface and cavity perimeter and serves to strengthen and reinforce the hitting surface of the club head, keeping the hitting surface rigid during impact with the golf ball thus eliminating face deflection during impact and providing maximum energy transfer to the golf ball.

A digital, differential signal processor for measuring, digitizing and storing a plurality of analog electrical potentials and for calculating selected potential differentials for display. Each analog, electrical potential is filtered and amplified in a signal conditioner and then its values at successive instants in time are converted to digital data by an analog to digital converter. The digital data that is output by the converter is stored for later recall. A computer calculates each selected differential potential by calculating the numerical difference between the digital data for the two potentials for which the differential is to be determined. The differential, as a function of time, may be displayed in real time or at a later time based upon the stored data. A multiplexer allows one analog to digital converter to process the signals output from a plurality of signal conditioners. The multiplexer, however, causes the instants in time, for which the digital data represents different potentials, to be offset in time with respect to each other. The invention uses numerical interpolation techniques to compensate for the non-simultaneous instants so as to allow calculation of the differentials as if the instants, at which the two potentials were measured, coincided in time.

An improved set of golf club irons, wherein each golf club iron head has a structure for redistributing weight of the club towards the perimeter thereof, particularly in the rear cavity region. This is accomplished by increasing the volume of the cavity by using an undercut perimeter which permits weight redistribution for example to increase the thickness of the top line, the toe and the sole of the club head. However, the undercut portion of the invention is sealed from moisture, dirt and other potentially detrimental materials that might otherwise accumulate therein during play. Such sealing is accomplished by means of a low density insert which is preferably made of a low mass density material such as plastic, rubber, epoxy or low density metal material such as titanium or aluminum. An additional feature of the present invention comprises an aspect of the structure thereof which varies from club to club in a set of irons. More specifically, a weight shift slot is used to vary the center of gravity between the toe and heel as a function of the loft of the club to provide maximum accuracy of trajectory and ball hitting capability, depending upon whether the club is a long, low loft club or a shorter, high loft club. The low density insert serves the additional function of dampening sound and vibration upon ball impact.

An improved golf club bag has a divider top that is adapted to receive golf clubs in a manner which properly distributes the golf clubs within the bag to balance the distribution of the weight, thereby providing a substantially stable center of gravity throughout the game. The golf bag comprises a golf club chamber which is of a generally elongated rectangular configuration but which has a golf club divider at the top thereof which divides and separates the golf clubs into a plurality of discrete golf club holding sections. Each such section may be considered as having two discrete portions, one on each side of the centerline of the golf club bag, each such portion being different in size and shape from the other. Each such section comprises a large portion and a small portion. The large portion is designed to accommodate more golf clubs than the small portion. The walls of the divider are shaped so that the small portion of each section tends to resist the migration of additional golf clubs toward that small portion, even when the bag is tilted.

An improved golf club head having a face or ball striking surface comprising a plurality of dimples, punch marks or depressions each of which is at least 0.02 inches deep and which, in a preferred embodiment, is characterized by a cross-section of truncated conical shape having a planar base having a diameter of at least 0.04 inches and a curved upper portion for merging tangentially into the adjacent face surface to form a surface diameter of at least 0.06 inches. A large array of equally spaced depressions provide substantially constant friction or spin force on the golf ball irrespective of angular deviations of the face from perpendicularity with the ball striking direction of the club head at the point of impact. The inventive club head is particularly advantageous in high loft configurations such as a wedge.

An improved golf club iron head utilizes a composite structure of two different weight densities to transfer weight from the hosel and heel to the ball-impact region of the head. The disclosed embodiment comprises the combination of a lightweight composite material in the outlying structural portions of the head and a metallic insert to form the majority of the face, the sole and a backweight to improve weight distribution, utilization of material mass and control of the location of the center of gravity.
