An apparatus for cleaning one or more selected portions of a surface of a cylinder of a printing press includes a plurality of brush elements disposed adjacent one another opposite the surface of the cylinder. A device for selectively moving one or more of the plurality of brushes to contact the selected portion or portions of the surface of the cylinder so as to clean the selected portion or portions is provided.

Apparatus for selectively cleaning a printing press cylinder

A printing unit has a frame and a plurality of printing cylinders, including a first plate cylinder, a first blanket cylinder, a second blanket cylinder mounted in the frame and forming a nip with the first blanket cylinder for receiving a web of material to be printed, and a second plate cylinder. A plurality of eccentric boxes are mounted on the cylinders and supported in the frame. A plurality of actuation assemblies are provided that are connected to the eccentric boxes. One of the actuation assemblies is connected to each of the eccentric boxes for moving the eccentric boxes such that the printing cylinders can be selectively positioned between a thrown-off position and an engagement position in regards to adjacent printing cylinders. Because of the use of eccentric boxes, lower rated and less complicated actuation assemblies can be used.

A printing press comprising a plate cylinder having an outer circumferential surface having an axially-extending slot therein, the slot having a first side and a second side, the plate cylinder having an axially-extending hole at least partially opening along the first side and having a hole axis. A printing plate has a lead edge and a tail edge, the lead edge and tail edge being located in the slot, and the plate cylinder has an eccentric shaft situated in the hole. The eccentric shaft is for eccentric rotation with respect to the hole axis so as to selectively provide a force against the lead edge and tail edge.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for transporting a flat printed material being conveyed, such as a printed web of material, a ribbon, a signature, or the like. An exemplary apparatus includes a pair of seizing elements for transporting a web of material, and corrugation inducing elements arranged along a linear path adjacent to each other. The corrugation inducing elements are provided in a non-contacting manner on both sides of a transition area within which the flat printed material is conveyed, the corrugation inducing elements substantially extending along the transition area which is located between an output of the pair of seizing elements and the input to further processing elements to corrugate the flat printed material.

An apparatus for closing an ink fountain on a printing press, the press having a fountain roll rotatable relative to a supply of ink and a flexible fountain blade adjacent thereto and spaced apart from the roll by a small gap. The size of the gap is controlled by a series of ink keys which move blade sections toward or away from the roll. When the press is to be shut down, the gap is closed by moving the blade against the roll in order to prevent ink leakage from the fountain. To do this, a bladder located adjacent the blade is inflated, forcing the entire length of the blade against the roll and thus closing the gap. The inflatable bladder operates independently of the ink keys, so that the keys need not be closed or adjusted when the press is shut down. When the press is restarted, the bladder deflates, allowing the blade to move away from the roll and to be controllable by the ink keys again.
