Devices providing adjustable optical power have previously been proposed for use as corrective lenses in prescription eyeglasses. There is disclosed a lens having optical power adjustable by relative lateral translation of two lens elements, the lens comprising: a first lens element sealed to a cover to define a cavity therebetween; a second lens element disposed within the cavity and coupled to an elongate drive element extending laterally from the second lens element, the second lens element being arranged to be driven laterally relative to the first lens element by lateral translation of the elongate drive element to thereby adjust the optical power of the lens, the lens comprising a lateral projection into which the cavity and drive element extend, the lateral projection having there mounted an adjuster for driving lateral translation of the elongate drive element. The lens reduces or prevents the ingress of dirt, moisture, sweat and grease between surfaces of the lens elements. There is also disclosed an eyeglasses frame, such as may be particularly suited to said adjustable power lens.

Fixed position optical devices for displaying augmented reality images are provided herein. In one embodiment an optical device includes a AIIE having a waveguide that reflects a computer generated image along a central viewing axis, the computer generated image being received from an image generator optically coupled to the waveguide, and a fixed lens assembly for coupling a background image with the computer generated image to create the augmented reality display, the fixed lens assembly including a proximal lens disposed on one side of the waveguide, the proximal lens being fixedly spaced apart from the waveguide at a first distance, and a distal lens disposed on an opposing side of the AIIE from the one side, the distal lens being fixedly spaced apart from the waveguide at a second distance.

A method of making a lens having adjustable optical power is disclosed. The lens is adjustable by relative lateral translation of at least two lens elements. The method may comprise providing a function yielding optical properties of the lens from starting geometries for the lens elements; refining the function to approximate required gaze angle optical performance over a range of said lateral translation; and using the refined function to derive geometries for making the lens elements. The function may comprise first and second functional parts respectively for the lens elements, and the method comprises using the function to derive geometries for making the lens elements, wherein the function relates optical path difference to a position across the lens elements, and the rate of change of curvature of the first functional part with position is different to the rate of change of curvature of the second functional part with position. There is also disclosed a lens having adjustable optical power. The lens is adjustable by relative lateral translation of at least two lens elements. The adjustable lens may be used for corrective eyeglasses.

Adjustable refractive optical device

Eyeglasses which comprise a pair of optical plates for each eye. Each of the optical plates is made up of a front plate and a rear plate and a return and hinge mechanism links the optical plates of each pair with one another. An adjustment mechanism facilitates relative movement of the optical plates, of each pair, in a plane substantially perpendicular to a viewing direction of the eyeglasses. The return and hinge mechanism and the adjustment mechanism are decoupled.

An optical module for head mounted displays and other applications comprises: an optical substrate and optical superstrate having inter-engaging ridged surfaces. A reflective layer is formed on at least one of the surfaces. An index matching material may be located between the surfaces. A region that receives a projected image, from a projector, directs rays launched from the projector onto the ridged surfaces, so that in use a viewer perceives an augmented image. The augmented image comprising reflected rays from the projector and transmitted rays from an object located on an opposite side of the module to that of the viewer.
