A bottom hole assembly has a tubular component with an axis, a first axial end, a second axial end and a poppet valve assembly mounted in the second axial end. An orifice retainer is mounted inside the tubular component adjacent the first axial end. The orifice retainer has a retainer first axial end, a retainer second axial end opposite the retainer first axial end and an orifice pocket adjacent the retainer second axial end. The orifice retainer is installed in and can be removed from the first axial end of the tubular component, opposite the poppet valve assembly. In addition, an orifice is mounted in the orifice pocket of the orifice retainer. The orifice operates in conjunction with the poppet valve assembly.

System, method and apparatus for orifice retention and replacement in a bottom hole assembly

Flow enters the device through one axial end, at least a portion of the flow exits through the other axial end. Some of the fluid flow can be diverted through the peripheral hole. A spring-biased axial piston may have an approximately constant force throughout its range of travel. The piston moves axially in response to the changing fluid flow rate to enable a constant amount of flow exiting the axial end of the tool to be achieved while diverting away excess flow through the side.

System, method and apparatus for controlling fluid flow through drill string

A device for limiting the flow of drilling fluid through a section of drill string is described. The device includes a cylindrical tube with holes in its periphery. Flow enters the device through an upper end of the tube and a portion of the flow exits through the lower end of the tube. In addition, some of the flow is diverted through the peripheral holes. A valve piston is supported near the lower end of the tube by a spring of approximately constant force through its range of travel. The valve piston moves axially as the flow rate through the tube changes flow rate to ensure that a substantially constant amount of flow exits through the lower end, while the excess flow is diverted from the tube through the peripheral holes. A means of damping or stopping the axial movement of the valve piston is included in the device.

A system and method for pressure locking a downhole tool in position during a drilling operation includes rotating the drill string to drill a borehole. A fluid is pumped through a passage of a drill string in the downhole direction wherein fluid undergoes a pressure drop at the downhole end of the drill string such that fluid in the passage of the drill string is under higher pressure than the fluid outside the drill string. While fluid is flowing, an uphole portion of the downhole tool, such as a MWD tool, is exposed to the higher pressure fluid and a downhole portion of the downhole tool to the lower pressure fluid, thereby seating the downhole tool in a receptacle member attached to the drill string in the passage. Ceasing flow easily eliminates the locking force created by differential pressure allowing the tool to be retrieved.

The piston includes a shaft extending therefrom to an exterior of the housing. An axial spring element is mounted between the piston and the housing. Both the piston and the chamber include non-cylindrical portions.

System, method and apparatus for reducing shock and vibration in down hole tools

The gap sub assembly comprises a pair of electrically conductive subs. Each sub has a threaded pin and box. A pin and box are threaded together to form a connection. An electrically insulating, woven fabric overlies and conforms with the threads of the connection pin. An electrically insulating, annular washer separates the seal faces of the connection. The assembly functions to provide an electrical discontinuity when incorporated into a conductive drill string.
