The method includes receiving sensor measurements of a first type from a first type of sensor, deriving a first value for a metric from the sensor measurements of the first type, receiving sensor measurements of a second type from a second type of sensor, wherein the second measurements of the second type include a second value for the metric, comparing the first value to the second value, determining whether the first type of sensor or the second type of sensor is malfunctioning based on the comparing, and storing or outputting information indicating whether first type of sensor and the second type of sensor are malfunctioning.

A method for predicting a telemetry mode of a downhole tool includes receiving a signal from the downhole tool at a computing system at a surface. The method also includes predicting the telemetry mode of the downhole tool based on the signal. The method also includes switching a telemetry mode of the computing system to match the telemetry mode of the downhole tool. The method also includes demodulating the signal using the computing system after the telemetry mode of the computing system has been switched.

A method for configuring transmission signals is disclosed. The method includes receiving a signal from a downhole tool in a wellbore. The signal may include a telemetry portion and a noise portion. The method also includes reproducing the telemetry portion based at least partially on the signal. Further, the method includes subtracting the telemetry portion from the signal. The method includes estimating, based at least partially on the subtraction, the noise portion of the signal. The method also includes altering a transmission configuration of the downhole tool based at least partially on the noise portion of the signal.

Methods and systems for spectrum estimation for measure while drilling telemetry in a well system

A method for placement of electrodes includes determining spatial distribution of a signal caused by generating an electromagnetic field in an instrument disposed in drill string used to drill a wellbore. The electromagnetic field comprises encoded measurements from at least one sensor associated with the instrument. Voltages induced by noise are measured across at least one pair of spaced apart electrodes placed at a plurality of positions spaced apart from a surface location of the wellbore. A spatial distribution of noise is estimated using the measured voltages. Positions for placement of at least two electrodes are selected using the spatial distribution of signal and the spatial distribution of noise.

A method for determining stick slip conditions. The method may include disposing an operating apparatus in fluid communication with a pressure wave transmission medium. At least one pressure measurement device may be disposed at least partially within the pressure wave transmission medium and at some distance from the operating apparatus. One or more pressure waves generated by the operating apparatus may be measured within the pressure wave transmission medium with the at least one pressure measurement device and pressure measurement data may be generated therefrom. The pressure measurement data from the at least one pressure measurement device may be transmitted to a data acquisition system. The pressure measurement data may be analyzed to detect one or more stick slip conditions from one or more variations in the pressure measurement data.
