A safety seat includes a base unit adapted to be attached to the vehicle. The base unit includes a base body, and a base carriage coupled to the base body and moveable relative thereto from a resting position to a ride down position. Movement of the base carriage from the resting position to the ride down position is caused by a force acting on the base carriage that is above a prescribed threshold. A braking element is coupled to the base body and the base carriage, and is adapted to bias the base carriage toward the resting position. A seat unit is detachably engageable with the base carriage and defines a seat cavity sized and configured to receive the child.

More specifically, the crash indication system for a child safety seat includes a seat bottom. A base is provided for supporting the seat bottom, which is slidably connected to the bases so that the seat body is movable relative to the base, between a resting position and a ride down position, a position due to a change in environmental forces. The seat body is adjustably affixed to a carriage to set a recline position. An indicator member is attached to the carriage and moves therewith to visually track and monitor the movement of the seat. When ride down of the seat occurs due to a change in forces to the seat, the indicator member moves with the sliding carriage to reflect a ride down position of the seat bottom. A ratchet connection is provided to prevent the carriage from going back to its resting position.

The child safety seat includes a seat body having a seat bottom and a seat back. The seat bottom is slidably connected to a first portion of the base and the seat back is slidably connected to a second portion of the base. The seat body is movable relative to the base, namely, between a resting position and ride down position. A dampening member is connected between the seat body and the base for dampening/retarding the movement of the seat body from the resting position to the ride down position. The dampening member is preferably partially oriented yarn that is no longer usable after use, such as in the event of an accident. The recline angle of the seat body relative to the base is adjustable.

A device for locking to a vehicle seat having a child car seat mounting system includes a pair of pawl assemblies with hooks that connect to the loops of a child car seat mounting system. The hooks are spring-actuated pawls. The device includes two indicator windows that can respectively display the open or locked status of the first hook and the second hook, which move in unison and also lock and open in unison. The indicator windows separately confirms the condition of both of the hooks. A button is interconnected to both of the hooks to simultaneously control opening and locking thereof. The button is also interconnected to a ratchet to permit simultaneous relocation of the hooks for custom adjustment. A child car seat can be mounted to the device to secure the child seat to a vehicle seat that includes a child car seat mounting system.

The coupling includes a main body with a fixed frame and a locking pawl. A carriage and impact member are connected in spring-biased fashion to the frame. The carriage controls locking of the pawl while the impact member continually urges the pawl in a counterclockwise direction. Pressing the release button causes the carriage to separate from the pawl permitting the impact member to rotate the pawl to permit entry and exit of a LATCH loop into locking communication with the tooth of the pawl. When the button is released, the carriage maintains the pawl open until a LATCH loop is impacted into the back of the pawl to disengage it from the carriage to lock the pawl closed. The invention includes a fail safe measure to maintain locking when any of the springs fail and the ability to accommodate loads much heavier than prior art couplings.

The present invention provides an adjustable child restraint device, namely, a juvenile safety seat. The safety seat preferably includes a backrest and a pair of side guards that protect the body and shoulder of a person, such as a small child. Each of the pair of side guards have a top end and a bottom end and each are respectively pivotally connected about an axis to the backrest at their bottom ends and movable between a closed position and an open position so that the distance between the respective bottom ends of the side guards remains substantially constant and the distance between the respective top ends of the side guards is adjustable by pivoting movement of the side guards. A curved guide means is disposed in communication with the side guards for guiding movement of the side guards.

Energy absorbing webbing is provided for use in child safety seat and child restraint devices. A harness system includes energy-absorbing regions into the construction of the harness to allow some release or extension of the harness during use. The energy-absorbing regions of the harness are formed using energy-absorbing webbing in a given region or regions to permit the webbing to extend or elongate so that strong forces are not fully and directly imparted to the child. The energy-absorbing region may be installed at various positions within the child safety seat and harness system and may be incorporated into the child safety harness as original equipment or as a retrofit feature.

The unique folding child vehicle seat () includes a seat back member () and a seat bottom member () that is pivotally connected thereto. The seat bottom () is pivotally connected to the seat back () in the unique location of a selected distance from the bottom edge of the seat back member. A support member () is provided proximal to the bottom edge of the seat back (). The seat bottom member () is pivotable between a closed position where the lower surface of the seat bottom member () rests on the support member () to provide a unique cantilevered seat configuration. Vertically oriented plates () provide an internal framework for added strength. Also, the seat () may be of a non-folding configuration where L-shaped vertically oriented plates () provide the internal framework.

The infant safety seat of the present invention provides improved occupant protection in all vehicles, especially in the front seat of vehicles equipped with a passenger-side airbag. The infant safety seat includes an air bag deflecting canopy, and dampening mechanisms to protect against the shock of airbag deployment and an impact. The safety seat comprises a base, adapted to be secured to a seat of the vehicle by a seat belt passed through an opening in the base and a cradle having a back portion and seat portion having sides and a handle attached across said sides. A latching mechanism incorporated in the base removably secures the cradle to the base by grasping an attachment element between the handle and sides. The cradle of the safety seat is removable utilizing a single-handed release mechanism to unlock the cradle from the base.

The convertible child safety seat of the present invention provides improved occupant protection in all vehicles, in both the front and rear seats, and especially in vehicles equipped with a passenger-side airbag. The child safety seat includes an air bag deflector, including a shock absorbent canopy to deflect an expanding air bag away from the infant and dampen the shock of airbag deployment and an impact. The child safety seat is convertible from a rearward facing position to a forward facing position. The cradle of the safety seat is removable utilizing a single-handed release mechanism to unlock the cradle from the frame. A handle with ergonomically designed grips aids removal of the cradle and allows carrying the cradle to put less strain on the carrier.
