A transmitter includes an equalizer for conditioning a data signal in response to a first and a second equalizer setting. The first and second equalizer settings are both associated with a selected point on a two-dimensional search grid. The search grid includes a first equalizer setting and a second equalizer setting for each point on the search grid. The transmitter transmits a data signal across a first channel medium using settings associated with a selected point on the search grid. A receiver analyzes the received signal from the transmitter to determine a signal quality metric. The search grid is used to select settings from neighboring points to produce signals that are evaluated to produce signal quality metrics. The results of the evaluations are used to efficiently search the search grid for optimum equalizer settings for the transmitter.

Transmitter equalizer optimization

An apparatus associated with a device connected to a data loop processes data received from the data loop to determine whether data from the data loop is to be routed back to the data loop. The apparatus may determine how to route data based on an analysis of whether the device is authorized to participate in a conversation currently associated with the data loop. Thus, latency otherwise imparted by the device when the device processes the data may be avoided.

A crosspoint switch uses an iterative process to deliver multicast packets from inputs to outputs. The switch includes output queues dedicated to the inputs, with backpressure indications provided from the output queues to the corresponding inputs. The inputs use the backpressure indications to schedule multicast packets for delivery to one or more of the output queues.

One embodiment of the system for processing digital signals includes a pointer follower ('PF') to receive a first digital signal. The first digital signal can have a first embedded payload, a first signal frame and a first PF pointer. The first pointer follower can extract the first embedded payload and forward the first embedded payload to an elastic buffer. The elastic buffer is operable to receive, delay and forward the first embedded payload. Additionally, a pointer generator ('PG') is operable to receive the first embedded payload from the elastic buffer, construct a new digital signal comprising a new signal frame, a PG pointer and the first embedded payload. The location of the new signal frame is determined by a synchronization pulse received from a synchronization module. In a further embodiment of the present invention, the delay imposed by the elastic buffer can depend upon the offset between the PG pointer and the PF pointer.

Method and system for frame and pointer alignment of SONET data channels

A system and method are disclosed for processing digital signals in a telecommunications system that allow for hit-less switching between a first digital signal in which a first payload, a first pointer value, and a first frame are transported on a first channel, and a second digital signal in which a second payload identical to the first payload, a second pointer value, and a second frame are transported on a second channel. The present invention includes first and second pointer followers, first and second comparators, a delay buffer with control circuit, first, second, third and fourth multiplexers, and a pointer generator. The delay buffer control circuit further comprises a write counter, a read counter, a phase detector, and a leak-out mechanism for reinitializing the delay buffer. The present invention aligns the payloads of the first and second digital signals to allow for hit-less selection between them.

Hit-less switching pointer aligner apparatus and method

A system and method are disclosed for processing digital signals in a telecommunications system that allow hit-less switching between a first digital signal in which a first payload, a first payload indicator marker and a first overhead are transported on a first channel, and a second digital signal in which a second payload identical to the first payload, a second payload indicator marker and a second overhead are transported on a second channel. The present invention includes first and second pointer followers, first and second elastic buffers with control circuits, a monitor circuit, a multiplexer, and a pointer generator. The first and second elastic buffer control circuits each further comprise a write counter, a read counter, a phase detector, and a leak-out mechanism for reinitializing the system after a protection switch. The present invention hit-lessly selects between the first and second digital signals without having to frame align the signals.
