An electrical lapping guide has a body with a thickness along a wafer axis, the body comprising a layer of conductive material having a resistivity. The conductive material layer comprises a first contact region and a second contact region, the first and second contact regions configured to electrically connect the electrical lapping guide to electrical leads. A lapping edge comprises an air-bearing plane axis perpendicular to a lapping axis, and a back edge opposite the lapping edge, the back edge comprising a plurality of notches.

A method fabricating a near field transducer for a heat assisted magnetic recording head including forming a peg region of a near field transducer along a first portion of a substrate of a heat assisted magnetic recording head, removing a first portion of the peg region, fabricating a barrier material along a surface of the peg region created by the removal of the first portion of the peg region; and forming an enlarged region adjacent the surface such that the barrier material is disposed at least between the surface of the peg region and the enlarged region.

A transducer having an external contact surface includes a writer and a contact member. The writer has a portion extendable relative to an adjacent portion of the external contact surface. The contact member surrounds at least a portion of the extendable writer portion and is spaced from the extendable writer portion. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the contact member is approximately equal to the coefficient of thermal expansion of the extendable writer portion.

Methods of manufacturing a transducer

A method is described for forming a magnetic recording head substrate. The method includes utilizing a metal feature on the magnetic recording head substrate as a grounding path. The magnetic recording head substrate is submerged in a solution containing ions of a second material, and the ions of the second material are electrodeposited on the magnetic recording head substrate.

Direct electrodeposition of magnetic recording head features

A method of depositing material onto a base portion of a wafer is disclosed. The method includes forming a bevel into a portion of a surface of the base portion of the wafer and depositing a first layer of conductive material onto the beveled portion of the base portion so that part of the first layer includes a wedge shape above the surface of the base portion. A second layer of conductive material is deposited onto the base portion including the portion of the base portion onto which the first layer of material is deposited.

Self-aligned bevels for write poles

A first trench sidewall has a continuous first taper angle that terminates at a first plane. At least one layer may be deposited that forms a second trench sidewall with a continuous second taper angle that extends a predetermined depth past the first plane and is less than the first taper angle. A write pole may then be formed on the second trench sidewall with the write pole being closer to the first trench sidewall at the predetermined depth than at the first plane.

An apparatus illustratively includes a return pole (RP) and a shield. The RP has a first RP magnetic layer, a second RP magnetic layer, and a RP non-magnetic layer. The RP non-magnetic layer separates and magnetically decouples the RP first and second magnetic layers. The shield has a first shield magnetic layer, a second shield magnetic layer, and a shield non-magnetic layer. The shield non-magnetic layer separates and magnetically decouples the shield first and second magnetic layers. A method illustratively includes generating magnetic flux and collecting the magnetic flux through an inner magnetic shell.

A transducer includes a first layer that is selectively deposited in a contact region to form a core, and selectively deposited in a transducer region to form a first element of the transducer. The transducer includes an electrically conductive magnetic deposit. The electrically conductive magnetic deposit forms a sidewall on the core. The electrically conductive magnetic deposit forms a second element of the transducer in the transducer region. The second element of the transducer has a planarized surface that is coplanar with a planarized surface of the sidewall.

A transducing device having a storage interface surface includes a writer having a pole tip region, a coil having a width positioned around the writer, and a heating element. The heating element extends to near the storage interface surface. A portion of the heating element is at least as wide as the coil. The heating element heats the writer in response to current flow through the heating element.

The present invention provides a thin-film structure that includes an etch-stop layer having a first side and a second side, a patterned compensation layer for dissipating thermal energy, and an etch-vulnerable layer, where the etch-stop layer substantially impedes etching. The patterned compensation layer is adjacent the first side of the etch-stop layer, and the etch-vulnerable layer is adjacent the second side of the etch-stop layer.

A method of forming a reader of a magnetic head includes multiple processing steps. First, a sensor is formed having an air bearing surface. Next, a hard mask is formed on the sensor extending a distance from the air bearing surface substantially equal to the desired stripe height of the sensor. Finally, a portion of the sensor not covered by the hard mask is removed.

Hard mask method of forming a reader of a magnetic head

A magnetic head having an air bearing surface is used to reduce thermal pole tip protrusion and recession. The magnetic head includes a substrate and a data transducer positioned upon the substrate adjacent the air bearing surface. The data transducer is comprised of a plurality of metallic layers. A compensation structure is positioned adjacent to at least one of the plurality of metallic layers, is exposed at the air bearing surface or recessed at the ABS and extends substantially perpendicular from the air bearing surface. The compensation structure is formed of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion less than a coefficient of thermal expansion of a material forming the substrate.
