A laser pumped tunable laser system is disclosed directed to achieving tunable outputs with high wall plug efficiencies. In particular, green laser pumped alexandrite lasers are discussed&#x2014;both pulsed and CW&#x2014;where the wall plug efficiencies of greater than 2% can be achieved using practical, commercially available pump lasers. In alternative approaches, frequency converted tunable radiation in the UV is achieved with high efficiency from compact, high beam quality devices.

Laser pumped tunable lasers

A laser pumped tunable laser system is disclosed directed to achieving tunable outputs with high wall plug efficiencies. In particular, green laser pumped alexandrite lasers are discussed&#x2014;both pulsed and CW&#x2014;wherein the wall plug efficiencies of greater than 2% can be achieved using practical, commercially available pump lasers. A laser flashlight employs an emitter disposed within a housing for emitting a coherent light beam having a gaussian spatial profile along an optical axis toward the exit face of the housing. An optical system disposed within the housing intermediate the emitter and the exit face of the housing includes a laser element pumped by the emitter, a frequency/wavelength converter, and a resonator, to form the coherent light into a laser beam. A beam expander receives the laser beam, disperses the laser beam, and transmits the dispersed laser beam from the light emitting end of the housing into the ambient environment.

Laser flashlight

A laser flashlight employs an emitter disposed within a housing for emitting a coherent light beam having a gaussian spatial profile along an optical axis toward the exit face of the housing. An optical system disposed within the housing intermediate the emitter and the exit face of the housing includes a laser element pumped by the emitter, a frequency/wavelength converter, and a resonator, to form the coherent light into a laser beam. A beam expander receives the laser beam, disperses the laser beam, and transmits the dispersed laser beam from the light emitting end of the housing into the ambient environment. The dispersion of the laser beam is such that the laser beam is safe for the human eye.

A power supply selectively applies electricity from a battery pack disposed within the housing to the laser emitter. An optical system disposed within the housing intermediate the laser emitter and the light emitting end of the housing includes a laser element pumped by the laser emitter, a frequency/wavelength converter, and a resonator, to form the coherent light into a laser beam. A beam expander receives the laser beam, disperses the laser beam, and transmits the dispersed laser beam from the light emitting end of the housing into the ambient environment. The dispersion of the laser beam is such that the laser beam is safe for the human eye at the light emitting end of the housing.

A diode-pumped gas laser includes a source of optical diode-pumping light and a gas cell having a first optical window for receiving the diode-pumping light. The gas cell contains a laser gas including a lasing gas comprised of at least one absorbing and lasing atomic or molecular gas. The lasing gas has an optical absorption band which is at least partially overlapped by the bandwidth of the diode-pumping light. The gas laser also includes a gas laser resonator for providing an output laser beam which is emitted from the gas cell via a second optical window. The output laser beam has one or more laser wavelengths. The gas laser may also include diode optics for directing the diode-pumping light through the first optical window and a heat power regulation system for regulating the temperature of the source of optical diode-pumping light.

Diode-pumped gas lasers

The average power capability of a solid-state laser is increased by cooling the lasing element to a cryogenic temperature. The laser pump chamber is configured to define a flow path for circulating cryogenic fluid. The cryogenic cooling is achieved for rod, slab, active-mirror or disc amplifier-type lasing elements.

Cryogenically-cooled solid-state lasers

A total-internal-reflection thermally compensated rod laser including a lasing rod composed of crystalline or glass material doped with at least one lasing ion. The rod has an optical axis, an axially extending, substantially optically flat, exterior surface, and a substantially optically flat conical surface at each end. Both conical end surfaces are coaxial with the optical axis and has a truncated tip. The first end has a convex surface and the second end has a concave surface. The rod has a geometry, including a diameter and a length, selected to provide substantially no net depolarization of an incident beam.

Total internal reflection thermally compensated rod laser

A vehicle mounted laser spotlight system employs a coherent/incoherent spotlight as a light source to produce an eyesafe light dispersion pattern to illuminate an ambient environment. The laser spotlight system includes an integrated laser unit having an integrated laser, power supply and control unit for selectively transmitting coherent light. A fiber optic cable optically couples the laser unit to a spotlight which receives the coherent light from the laser and transmits a beam of coherent light into the ambient environment. An incoherent light transmitter selectively transmits a beam of incoherent light coincident with the beam of coherent light. A converter module may be disposed intermediate the laser and the spotlight to convert the frequency and wavelength of the coherent light.

Mobile laser spotlight system for law enforcement

The present invention features a slab laser apparatus having a stable/unstable resonator. The slab laser comprises a slab-shaped medium for producing a beam of coherent light. The slab-shaped medium is physically defined by an entrance end face; a rear, exiting end face; and two oppositely disposed and substantially parallel side faces. The respective end faces of the medium are disposed along an axis defining a 'p' plane; the side faces are disposed along an axis defining an plane. A light beam entering at the entrance end face of the slab-shaped medium along the 'p' plane axis reflects back and forth within the slab-shaped medium via total internal reflection, exiting at the rear end face. A stable optical cavity is defined for the 'p' plane, comprising a hemispherical, high reflector curvature having an finite radius of curvature, and a flat, partially reflecting, outcoupler. An unstable optical resonator is defined for the plane, which operates in a low order transverse mode. The resonator in the plane consists of a high reflector mirror, and a negative radius of curvature, partially reflective mirror. The partially-reflecting outcoupler is a substantially cylindrical optical component onto which has been coated a variable reflectivity mirror (VRM) profile. The transmission of this mirror surface varies in the transverse direction. The optical component is flat in the 'p' plane and cylindrical in the 's' plane. The VRM coating is disposed on the cylindrical face. The outside surface may be coated with an anti-reflective coating.
