The present invention relates to an improved EPD which comprises both the traditional up/down switching and the in-plane switching modes. In other words, the improved EPD has dual switching modes. The monochrome EPDs of the present invention are capable of displaying highlight color of choice which is different from the text. For example, white background, blue text, and red highlight can be shown in any selected areas of the display. Furthermore, the full color EPDs of the present invention are capable of displaying high contrast images of high color saturation. Both high quality black and white states are possible in the full color displays of the present invention. The EPDs of the present invention do not need complex circuitry design, and are compatible with low cost and high yield roll-to-roll manufacturing processes.

Electrophoretic display with dual mode switching

This invention relates to three-dimensional (3-D) electrophoretic displays comprising individually sealed cells filled with optically active electrophoretic dispersions, and more particularly to bi-stable, low-power-consumption and sealed microcup-based electrophoretic displays for high-quality three-dimensional imagery applications.

Three-dimensional electrophoretic displays

This invention relates to an electrophoretic display comprising isolated cells of well-defined shape, size and aspect ratio which cells are filled with charged pigment particles dispersed in a solvent, a backlight and optionally a background layer. The display may have the traditional up/down switching mode, an in-plane switching mode or a dual switching mode.

Transflective electrophoretic display

The present invention relates to an improved EPD which comprises the in plane switching mode. More specifically, the EPD of the present invention comprises isolated cells formed from microcups of well defined size, shape and aspect ratio and the movement of the particles in the cells is controlled by the in-plane switching mode. The EPD of the present invention may be produced in a continuous manufacturing process, and the display gives improved color saturation.

Electrophoretic display with in-plane switching

An electrophoretic display having at least one holding electrode is disclosed. The display comprises a plurality of electrophoretic cells filled with charged particles dispersed in a dielectric solvent. Each said cell is positioned between a top electrode layer and a bottom electrode layer. The top electrode layer comprises at least one driving electrode positioned over more than one cell. The bottom electrode layer comprises at least one driving electrode positioned under more than one cell. The display further comprises a holding electrode located in the bottom electrode layer. The display may further comprise a colored background located under and visible through the bottom electrode layer.

Electrophoretic display with holding electrodes

An electrophoretic display comprising at least one in-plane gating electrode. The gating electrode(s) provide a gating effect, which raises the effective threshold voltage to prevent the undesired movement of the charged particles in the cells. The design of the invention can be manufactured using low cost materials by efficient processes.
