A hinge mechanism for attaching ear accessories to a helmet allows an accessory to be attached at a point outside the helmet shell utilizing, for example, a slidable mounting rail, and to reach under the edge of the helmet shell so that the accessory is supported in contact with the wearer's head. The hinge mechanism is well suited for use in connection with military helmets that have a 'bulge' or protrusion over the ear.

A pivot-arm assembly is provided for attaching an ear cup to a mounting feature on an exterior of a helmet. The pivot-arm assembly comprises a mount configured to releasably couple to the mounting feature. An arm has a first end configured to couple to the ear cup and a second end. A hinge is rotatable about a first axis and about a second axis. The hinge is coupled to the second end of the arm and disposed between the second end of the arm and the mount such that the first end of the arm is rotatable relative to the mount about the first axis and the first end of the arm is rotatable relative to the mount about the second axis. A biasing member is coupled to the arm and is configured to spring bias the first end of the arm relative to the mount in a rotatable direction about the second axis of the hinge.

Strap buckles for headgear can be independently adjusted by single-handed operation while the headgear is worn. To tighten the straps, the wearer pulls a strap buckle toward the chin. The adjustment preferably involves a 1:1 length-adjustment ratio, such that the strap is shortened substantially by the amount the wearer pulls on the buckle.

A pivot-arm assembly is provided for attaching an ear cup to a mounting feature on an exterior of a helmet. A biasing member is coupled to the arm and is configured to spring bias the first end of the arm relative to the mount in a rotatable direction about the second axis of the hinge.

A mandible shield comprises at least one panel having a peripheral edge, an inner surface, and an outer surface. The at least one panel is comprised of a ballistics material. A frame is coupled to the at least one panel and covers the peripheral edge of the at least one panel. The frame has at least one window exposing at least a portion of the outer surface of the at least one panel. The frame is configured to at least partially extend over a mandible of a user when the frame is coupled to opposing lateral sides of a helmet.

A helmet which includes an impact absorbing liner and a comfort liner. The comfort liner in turn includes at least one adjustable device which during the normal use of the helmet is positioned on the top of the head of the user. The adjustable device is suitable for being fastened to the impact absorbing liner of the helmet by coupling suitable for being removably engaged on the impact absorbing liner of the helmet via a plurality of anchor points. By changing the anchor point where the adjustable device is engaged, the user is allowed to adjust the conformation and slope of the adjustable device of the helmet according to his own needs.

An improved edge band for a protective helmet includes a flexible woven-fiber elongate band applied to the edge of a helmet shell. The elongate band is positioned such that side edges of the elongate band extend in intimately conforming contact along a surface contour of the helmet shell. The edge band includes a matrix material in contact with fibers of the elongate band.
