This invention relates to a novel process for producing polymer/polyols characterized by the use of specific amounts of particular monomer combinations and by maintaining a low monomer concentration throughout the reaction mixture during the process. The monomer combinations are acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile and styrene or alpha-methyl styrene. The process produces novel polymer/polyols characterized by their convertibility to low density, water-blown polyurethane foams having reduced scorch and by the relatively small size of the polymer particles.

Polyurethane foam prepared from a copolymer/polyol composition

A unique substantially non-flammable impregnant for polyether-derived polyurethane foam substrates is disclosed. The impregnant is characterized by a carboxylated neoprene latex and an alumina trihydrate. It can be further characterized by a diammonium hydrogen phosphate, urea, a magnesium-zinc complex, a surfactant and water. A method for applying the impregnant to the mentioned substrate is also disclosed. That method is characterized by depositing the impregnant on the substrate, impregnating and curing it, and recovering a substantially non-flammable product. That impregnated polyether-derived polyurethane foam product can be configurated as a laminate and adhered to some other substrate. Articles like mattresses and cushions can be advantageously fabricated using the unique impregnant.

Polymer/polyols and process for production thereof

Provided as catalysts for the formation of cellular urethane polymers ranging from flexible to rigid foams, are beta-amino carbonyl compounds wherein carbonyl is present as an amido or carboxylic acid ester group and the beta-amino group is present as dialkylamino or an N-morpholino or N,N'-piperazino heterocyclic nucleus. Effective in the catalysis of the water-isocyanate reaction, these beta-amino amides and beta-amino esters are used with particular advantage in the manufacture of water-blown flexible foams, both molded and free-rise, including high-resilience and flame-retarded foam. The beta-amino carbonyl catalysts allow for the formation of foam products essentially free of the odor associated with amines such as N-ethylmorpholine. In view of this highly desirable characteristic and their other beneficial properties, the catalysts of the invention are advantageously employed as direct replacements for N-ethylmorpholine in high-resilience and other foam formulations.

Flame retardant flexible polyurethane foams having a porosity in the range between 0.5 and 10 cubic feet per minute and meeting all of the requirements of Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Docket 302 may be produced from tolylene diisocyanate (which is a mixture of the 2,4- and 2,6-isomers) and polyether polyols without downgrading the flexibility or the porosity of the foam by (a) using in the polymerization reaction a tolylene diisocyanate in which the 2,4- to 2,6-isomer ratio is such that the tolylene diisocyanate contains not more than about 76 percent by weight of the 2,4-isomer, and (b) incorporating into the reaction medium prior to polymerization from about 1 to about 8 percent by weight of dibromoneopentyl glycol in a form such that the dibromoneopentyl glycol can be polymerized with the other reactants in the foam matrix, the weight of the dibromoneopentyl glycol being based on the weight of the polyether polyol used in the polymerization reaction. Best results have been obtained when the dibromoneopentyl glycol is incorporated in the reaction medium, either in the form of a dispersion or a solution of dibromoneopentyl glycol in the polyether polyol, using a tolylene diisocyanate in which the 2,4- to 2,6-isomer ratio is such that the tolylene diisocyanate contains 72.5 .+-. 2 percent by weight of the 2,4-isomer and 27.5 .+-. 2 percent by weight of the 2,6-isomer.
