A backplane operative to drive an array of emissive pixel elements is disclosed. Each pixel element comprises a pixel circuit drive element and an emissive element, wherein the pixel circuit drive element comprises a memory cell, a current source element, and a modulation element. The present invention improves on an emissive display by providing a backplane and modulation system that enables fabrication of multi-color or monochrome LED display systems that operate efficiently and without objectionable image artifacts. One aspect of the present invention is to realize the backplane in a single crystal silicon process with a minimum number of metal layers while providing each color with a suitable operating voltage and drive current.

A method of pulse width modulating a spatial light modulator comprises determining a modulation sequence and applying the modulation sequence to the spatial light modulator in a time order method. The modulation sequence comprises a plurality of minor modulation segments. Each minor modulation segment comprises an always-on modulation segment in an always-on state. The plurality of minor modulation segments are temporally spaced such that the always-on modulation segments are spaced at predetermined intervals. Each minor modulation segment comprises at least one thermometer bit.

System and method for pulse-width modulating a phase-only spatial light modulator

A display device and modulation scheme for applying image data to an imager is disclosed. The display may use a modulation scheme wherein spacing of row write actions on the rows creates gray scale modulation, wherein one row spacing between sequential row write actions is at a first distance while another row spacing between sequential row write actions is at a distance greater than said first distance. The modulation scheme may create a series of write pointers that create a corresponding series of write planes. In some embodiments, modulation efficiency is increased allowing the use of lower frequency imaging circuits to achieve the same display image.

Simplified pixel cell capable of modulating a full range of brightness

A temperature control and compensation system is implemented by employing a closely coupled electrical architecture that applies the measured microdisplay temperature, one for each color channel, together with lookup tables preloaded with measured or predicted data for a display, to modify the liquid crystal voltage operating range of each microdisplay as required to achieve and maintain the proper white point operating point for the display. The electrical architecture includes functional blocks as required for realizing the temperature compensation and control for each color channel. The system microprocessor and control unit employs a lookup table to set the control registers on each microdisplay controller with values according to a computed value using the data retrieved from the lookup tables. The range of values in the lookup table includes setups for a number of varied conditions. One of these conditions is temperature.

Combined temperature and color-temperature control and compensation method for microdisplay systems

A technique for providing a desired level of color balance in field sequential color systems with brightness enhancement. In color wheels having a spectrally-broad transmissive segment, the spectrally-broad segment has a transmittance that is selected to provide a desired level of color balance. This can include transmittance characteristics that are inversely related to the spectral characteristics of the light source or optics. In color switches, this can include varying the amplitude and time duration of the contribution from each of the three primary colors.

Color-balanced brightness enhancement for display systems

Optical engines using a reduced number of components offer advantages over more complex optical systems. Three panel optical engines have offered the advantage of relatively high throughput but at the cost of complexity and increased components on the bill of materials. Conventional two-panel engines have required the use of complex retarder structures to achieve the dual polarizations state for the three primary colors. The present invention achieves this goal while using simpler optical retarders.
