A carbon article shaped as a brake disc, the brake disc being coated with an anti-oxidant coating obtained by applying as a primer coat a composition including orthophosphoric acid, aluminum hydroxide, demineralized water, and a wetting additive; curing the primer coat; applying as a barrier coat a composition including orthophosphoric acid, aluminum hydroxide, demineralized water, colloidal silica, silicon hexaboride, boron, and a wetting additive; and curing the barrier coat.

Carbon article having an improved primer coating and an improved anti-oxidant coating

A brake apparatus () and method of operating the apparatus are disclosed. The apparatus () has a plurality of brake elements () with a combined thickness of Y. At least one of the brake elements () has a wear portion () for tribological interaction with a wear portion () of an adjacent element () and is formed in two separable parts () having thicknesses Aand A. The method includes operating an actuator () at an actuation extension length less than a maximum actuation extension length to cause the wear portions () of the brake elements () to tribologically engage and thereby wear. This tribological engagement is such that as the elements () wear to a combined thickness of less than Y the extension length of the actuator is increased. A spacer () is inserted between the two parts () of the brake element () to cause the wear portions () to be tribologically engagable at a actuation extension length less than the increased actuation extension length.

Braking

A composite article for use in an aircraft brake heat pack, the article comprises a core layer having a face portion and a wear layer attached to the face portion, wherein the wear layer has a density lower than the core layer. The core layer is preferably formed from impregnated C&#x2014;C and the wear layer is preferably formed from C&#x2014;C. The article may be used as a brake disc.

Composite article

Refractory carbide particles are located in a defined area of a matrix, specifically silicon carbide particles are encapsulated within a porous matrix or carbon precursor, by locating particles of refractory carbide-forming material or a precursor thereof in a defined area of the matrix followed by depositing carbon within the matrix at a temperature below that of the melting point of the carbide-forming material.

Refractory-carbon composite brake friction elements

An annular body, and method of making same, comprising at least one wear surface portion, the portion comprising a plurality of layers held in a matrix, each layer consisting essentially of fibres which extend generally in one direction and parallel to each other and from the centre of the body to the periphery, whereby the wear of that surface portion is improved. The body can be formed into an aircraft brake disc.

Wear resistant articles

In a composite brake disc such as a carbon composite brake disc having reinforcement provided by layers of carbon fibre material, the drive region is provided with additional reinforcement to that of the friction region by laying or otherwise providing additional fibre reinforcement material substantially uniformly in the drive region.
