A method of displaying an operational parameter of a surgical system is disclosed. The method includes receiving, by a cloud computing system of the surgical system, first usage data, from a first subset of surgical hubs of the surgical system; receiving, by the cloud computing system, second usage data, from a second subset of surgical hubs of the surgical system; analyzing, by the cloud computing system, the first and the second usage data to correlate the first and the second usage data with surgical outcome data; determining, by the cloud computing system, based on the correlation, a recommended medical resource usage configuration; and displaying, on respective displays on the first and the second subset of surgical hubs, indications of the recommended medical resource usage configuration.

Method of hub communication, processing, display, and cloud analytics

A motorized surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes a motor configured to drive an end effector between an unarticulated position and an articulated position, a sensor configured to detect a position of the end effector and provide a signal indicative of the position of the end effector, and a control circuit coupled to the sensor and the motor. The control circuit is configured to detect a position of the end effector via the signal provided by the sensor and provide a drive signal to the motor to drive the end effector at a velocity corresponding to the signal indicative of the position of the end effector.

Surgical instrument having controllable articulation velocity

A surgical instrument cartridge is usable with different versions of surgical instruments. The surgical instrument includes a sensor having different output modes and a control circuit coupled to the sensor. The control circuit is configured to determine whether a version of the modular component corresponds to a version of the surgical instrument and cause the sensor to output data detected by the sensor in different output formats that are compatible with the version of the particular surgical instrument in which the cartridge has been inserted.

A method of operating a surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes an electronic system comprising an electric motor coupled to the end effector; a motor controller coupled to the motor; a parameter threshold detection module configured to monitor multiple parameter thresholds; a sensing module configured to sense tissue compression; a processor coupled to the parameter threshold detection module and the motor controller; and a memory coupled to the processor. The memory stores executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to monitor multiple levels of action thresholds and monitor speed of the motor and increment a drive unit of the motor, sense tissue compression, and provide rate and control feedback to the user of the surgical instrument.

Powered surgical instrument

A surgical system comprising a surgical instrument and a surgical hub is disclosed. The surgical instrument is configured to perform a surgical procedure and comprises a housing, a shaft assembly, an end effector, and a sensor configured to sense a parameter associated with a function of the surgical instrument. The surgical hub comprises a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to receive data from the sensor, wherein the data comprises the parameter associated with the function of the surgical instrument; infer a step of the surgical procedure being performed by the surgical instrument, based on the data from the sensor; receive data from a database, wherein the data from the database is associated with the step of the surgical procedure; compare a value of the parameter to the data received from the database; and control the surgical instrument based on the comparison.

A surgical system comprising an end effector, a closure driver, a force sensor, and a control circuit is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw rotatable relative to the first jaw between an open position and a closed position. The closure driver is configured to apply a closure force to the second jaw to rotate the second jaw toward the closed position. The force sensor is to measure a parameter indicative of the closure force. The control circuit is to receive an output of the force sensor indicative of the parameter and set a velocity of the closure driver based on the received output and a force threshold.

A smoke evacuation device that evacuates smoke from a surgical site and filters the smoke from the air. The smoke evacuation device can include a fluid trap for removing moisture from the smoke. The smoke evacuation device can also include a filter with a compression mechanism for compressing a filter medium. The smoke evacuation device can also include features for controlling flow parameters, noise, and vibrations of the device. A remote activation device can also be used to activate the smoke evacuation device upon detection of certain system parameters.

The end effector including an electrode electrically coupled to RF drive circuit, an ultrasonic blade acoustically coupled to the ultrasonic transducer, and a sensor to measure tissue parameters. The method includes applying an RF current drive signal to the electrode by the RF drive circuit; applying an ultrasonic drive signal to the ultrasonic transducer by the ultrasonic transducer drive circuit to acoustically excite the ultrasonic blade; controlling intensity, wave shape, and/or frequency of the RF current drive signal and the ultrasonic drive signal on a sensed measure of a tissue or user parameter.

Aspects of the present disclosure include control systems of an electrosurgical system for managing the flow of fluid, such as saline, and rates of aspiration or suction, in response to various states of conditions at a surgical site. The control system(s) may monitor and adjust to impedance at the surgical site, temperature of the surgical tissue, and/or RF current of electrodes, and may account for certain undesirable conditions, such as the electrodes sticking. The control systems may include various automatic sensing scenarios, while also allowing for several manual conditions.

A method for characterizing a state of an end effector of an ultrasonic device is disclosed. The ultrasonic device including an electromechanical ultrasonic system defined by a predetermined resonant frequency. The electromechanical ultrasonic system further including an ultrasonic transducer coupled to an ultrasonic blade. The method including applying, by an energy source, a power level to the ultrasonic transducer, measuring, by a control circuit coupled to a memory, an impedance value of the ultrasonic transducer, comparing, by the control circuit, the impedance value to a reference impedance value stored in the memory; classifying, by the control circuit, the impedance value based on the comparison; characterizing, by the control circuit, the state of the electromechanical ultrasonic system based on the classification of the impedance value; and adjusting, by the control circuit, the power level applied to the ultrasonic transducer based on the characterization of the state of the end effector.

The method comprises obtaining a handle, wherein the handle comprises a distal end comprising a shaft interface surface and a first set of magnetic elements. Disclosed is a surgical system, comprising surgical hubs configured to be communicatively coupled to surgical instruments in surgical procedures; and a cloud computing system, comprising an input/output interface configured for accessing data from the surgical hubs. The cloud computing system is configured to aggregate surgical instrument data and patient outcome date from the surgical hubs; determine a correlation between the surgical instrument data and the patient outcome data; access a live surgical procedure data for a live surgical procedure; and determine an irregularity in the live surgical procedure data based on the correlation.

A surgical system includes a control circuit, a surgical instrument, and a user interface is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes a plurality of components and a sensor. Each of the plurality of components of the surgical instrument includes a device parameter and is configured to transmit its respective device parameter to the control circuit. The sensor of the surgical instrument is configured to detect a tissue parameter associated with a proposed function of the surgical instrument, and transmit the detected tissue parameter to the control circuit. The control circuit is configured to analyze the detected tissue parameter in cooperation with each respective device parameter based on a system-defined constraint. The user interface is configured to indicate whether the surgical instrument comprising the plurality of components is appropriate to perform the proposed function.

A method for controlling a surgical instrument is disclosed. In at least one instance, the surgical instrument comprises a shroud and the operation of the surgical instrument is modified based on input from a sensing circuit configured to sense a parameter of the shroud. In certain instances, the surgical instrument comprises a strain gage circuit and the operation of the surgical instrument is modified based on input from the strain gage circuit.
