Compositions and methods for removing oily or greasy soils

Disclosed are concentrated alkaline liquid detergent compositions suitable for dilution with hard or de-ionized water. The compositions can be stored before and after dilution for prolonged periods at temperatures ranging from about 40.degree. F. (4.degree. C.) to about 100.degree. F. (38.degree. C.) without precipitates forming. The compositions contain a maleic acid-olefin copolymer, a detergent surfactant, a solvent/buffer system comprising beta-aminoalkanol and/or monoethanolamine, and less than about 85% water. The copolymer acts as a crystallization inhibitor and is uniquely soluble in the concentrated liquid detergent compositions.

Aqueous, liquid hard surface detergent compositions having improved cleaning and good filming/streaking characteristics contain specific polycarboxylate detergent builders at critical levels. Preferred formulas contain a zwitterionic/anionic detergent surfactant mixture at levels (e.g., from about 0.02 to about 15%); hydrophobic solvent; alkaline material, especially volatile alkaline materials comprising monoethanolamine or certain beta-amino-alkanol compounds; and salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as the detergent builder in levels (e.g., from about 0.05% to about 0.5%, by weight of the composition).

Aqueous, liquid hard surface detergent compositions contain zwitterionic and cationic detergent surfactants and monoethanolamine and/or other specific beta-aminoalkanols as solvents and/or buffers for improved spotting/filming and good cleaning. Some formulas do not contain large amounts of builders and are suitable for general purpose cleaning including cleaning of glass. Other formulas are concentrated and contain chelating agents (detergent builders) to improve stability of more dilute compositions prepared from the concentrated compositions.
