An indication that a patient event occurred may be used to evaluate the efficacy of at least one therapy program and/or adjust therapy delivery to the patient. In some examples, the patient event indication includes patient input that may be received via an event indication button of a programming device. In some examples, therapy delivery may be adjusted by adjusting at least one therapy parameter value, switching therapy programs or therapy program groups or restarting a therapy cycle of a medical device.

Therapy adjustment based on patient event indication

An indication that a patient event occurred may be used to evaluate the efficacy of at least one therapy program and/or adjust therapy delivery to the patient. In some examples, the patient event indication includes patient input that may be received via an event indication button of a programming device. In addition to or instead of the patient input, the patient event indication may be generated based on a physiological parameter of the patient. In some examples, therapy delivery may be adjusted by adjusting at least one therapy parameter value, switching therapy programs or therapy program groups or restarting a therapy cycle of a medical device. The patient input via an event indication button may also help evaluate whether a therapy system is useful for the patient.

A fluid delivery system comprises a pump configured to deliver a therapeutic agent to a patient, a memory storing a therapy program defining the delivery of the therapeutic agent to the patient by the pump and a default infusion schedule based on the therapy program, and a processor configured to control the pump to deliver the therapeutic agent to the patient according to the therapy program, to determine an error condition that prevents the pump from continuing to deliver therapy according to the therapy program, and, upon determination of the error condition, to control the pump to deliver the therapeutic agent to the patient according to the default infusion schedule.

Drug infusion system capable of delivering a fluid medication to a patient and method for doing same is described. An implantable drug delivery device is capable of delivering the fluid medication at a programmable rate to the patient under control of an original programming cycle having a plurality of steps in a plurality of time slots beginning at a starting time. The programming cycle specifies the programmable rate for each of the plurality of steps. An external controller is capable of storing a program representative of the original programming cycle in the implantable drug delivery device at a programming time. The drug infusion system adjusts the implantable drug delivery device so that the original programming cycle will begin at a time during the original programming cycle adjusted for the programming time.

An implantable medical device for producing a variable therapeutic output to a patient. A therapeutic output delivery module requires replenishment following delivery of a predetermined amount of the therapeutic output. A calculator is responsive to a measure of an amount of the therapeutic output actually delivered to the patient for determining a parameter representative of a time at which the therapeutic output delivery module of the implantable medical device should be replenished with the therapeutic substance based at least in part upon the amount obtained from the measure. A method determines a parameter representative of a time at which a therapeutic output module of an implantable medical device should be replenished following delivery of a predetermined amount of therapeutic output. An amount of the therapeutic output actually delivered to the patient is measured. The parameter is calculated based at least in part upon the amount obtained in the measuring step.

In a medical treatment device implanted within the body of a patient, a system and method using volatile and non-volatile memory devices within an implanted drug infusion pump to provide a safe and robust programmable system, able to back-up and restore the device's hardware and software operating parameters in the event of RAM corruption and as an alternative to hardware trim techniques. The pump includes a processor, a ROM, a RAM, and an EEPROM. The RAM serves as a main memory and the EEPROM serves a back-up memory in the event of RAM corruption. The ROM serves as an additional layer of back-up memory in the event of RAM and EEPROM corruption.

A generic treatment protocol is disclosed for therapeutically treating a patient via an implantable treatment device. Treatment steps can be defined to start and end at absolute times, or can be programmed via telemetry to start a certain amount of time after termination of a previously executed treatment step. Treatment steps have a treatment rate or dose attribute and a duration attribute. Treatment steps may optionally enable patient-activated bolus overlays. Patient-activated rate or dosage adjustments can also optionally be enabled. Repeated-execution treatment-step groups are also provided. Such treatment-step groups can have start and end times, a group duration, and a group total dose, each defined in a manner similar to that for a treatment step. Treatment-step groups include a repetition count, which could be set to a value that causes the group to repeat forever. Single execution treatment steps can, accordingly, be programmed to execute before and/or after a repeated-execution treatment-step group.

Generic multi-step therapeutic treatment protocol

In a medical treatment device implanted within the body of a patient, a system and method for organizing storage of the device's firmware in ROM, RAM, and EEPROM such that a ROM-based system is implemented initially using pointers stored in RAM, which RAM-based pointers point to ROM-based functions. When revisions to the functionality of the treatment device are desired, code is downlinked via an external programmer and telemetry to link to RAM, and one or more pointers, as appropriate, which pointers point to the downlinked code in RAM, are downlinked to RAM. In this manner, revisions to the firmware of an implanted medical treatment device can be downlinked to the device thereby eliminating the need to explant the device in certain circumstances. The amount of code placed in ROM is maximized, with only pointers to functions and new or revised code segments stored in RAM as needed.
