This invention is to a method and system for operating a hydrocarbon conversion process. A two stage reactor system is used in which the gas superficial velocity of the second reaction stage is greater than that in the first reaction stage. The first reaction stage operates at more continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) like characteristics, and the second reaction stage operates at more plug flow reactor (PFR) like characteristics.

This invention provides processes for maintaining a desired particle size distribution in an oxygenate to olefin reaction system. In one embodiment, the invention comprises replacing lost catalyst fines with less active co-catalyst particles. By adding less active co-catalyst particles to the reaction system, desirable fluidization characteristics and hydrodynamics can be maintained without affecting the overall (or primary catalyst) performance and product selectivities. The invention is also directed to a population of catalyst particles having a desirable particle size distribution well-suited for realizing ideal fluidization and hydrodynamic characteristics.

The present invention provides a method for converting a feed containing oxygenates to olefins and comprises the following steps: providing a feed including an oxygenate; contacting the feed in a reactor apparatus with a catalyst including a molecular sieve, the contacting taking place under conditions effective to convert the oxygenate to a product including a light olefin, the conditions including a gas superficial velocity of at least two meters per second at at least one point in the reaction zone; and recirculating a first portion of the catalyst to recontact the feed.

A process for method for the production of olefin product from an oxygenate-containing feedstock includes exposing a silicoaluminophosphate catalyst to an oxygenate-containing feedstock in a reaction zone under conditions effective to convert the oxygenate-containing feedstock to an olefin product, by stripping at least a portion of the exposed catalyst with a stripping gas; and returning at least a portion of the stripped catalyst directly to the reaction zone.
