A phosphate ester-based functional fluid composition incorporating at least one erosion inhibitor selected from the erosion inhibitors of the invention. The phosphate ester-based functional fluids are particularly useful as aviation hydraulic fluids.

Functional fluid compositions containing erosion inhibitors

This invention relates to novel water soluble metal working fluid compositions, their use to work metal, a process for working metal using such compositions and the metal worked article of manufacture. More particularly, this invention relates to fluid compositions useful in cutting, grinding, shaping and other metal working operations which require a lubricant. The terms &ldquo;first Group A&rdquo; and &ldquo;second Group B&rdquo; are used herein to denote different groups and not to indicate any sequence of use or selection as any possible combination or sequence of use of a component(s) is envisioned without limit of any kind. The disclosed fluid compositions are also anticorrosive and environmentally more acceptable than current oil based fluids. There has now been discovered an essentially odorless, substantially non-oil misting, water-soluble metal working fluid comprising at least one component selected from a first Group A herein and optionally one or more components selected from a second Group B herein preferably with the balance of the composition being water and other (optional) minor ingredients. When a component is employed from Group A and a component is employed from Group B the action of the combination generally enhances performance of the resulting combination with contain moieties from both Group A and Group B.

Water soluble metal working fluids

There are disclosed corrosion inhibiting compositions comprising (a) at least one amido acid or salt thereof and (b) at least one of an aryltriazole or 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole wherein the molar ratio of (a) to (b) is about 0.34:1 to about 5:1, and aqueous metal working fluids containing the corrosion inhibiting compositions of the invention.

Compositions comprising certain amino acids such as aspartic acid, when fully ionized at alkaline pH, function effectively as corrosion inhibitors for ferrous metals in the presence of an aqueous medium. This effect is enhanced with increased fluid velocity.

Corrosion inhibiting multilayer coating

A corrosion inhibiting composition is provided. The composition comprises an intrinsically conductive polymer, e.g. polyaniline or polypyrrole, blended in a binder material, preferably a non-thermoplastic matrix, the blend being capable of adhering to a metal surface to provide enhanced corrosion resistance to the metal. The blend provides corrosion resistance in a variety of corrosive environments such as acidic, alkaline, and salt environments. A method for protecting metal surfaces from corrosive attack by applying the corrosion inhibiting composition is provided, as well as two component corrosion inhibiting coatings, corrosion inhibited thin films of metal adhered to an intrinsically conducting polymer containing substrate, and corrosion inhibited metal bilayers.

Aqueous compositions comprising certain amino acids such as polyaspartic acid or aspartic acid/glutamic acid copolymers when at least partially protonated at pH of 7 or below effectively clean ferrous metal surfaces by contacting said surfaces with said compositions.

Process for metal cleaning

A passive metal is coated with a perfluorocarbon copolymer cation-exchange polymer and subsequently annealed. The annealed polymer coating acts as a barrier to anions which attack and breakdown the passivity mechanism of such passive metals, thereby protecting the passive metals against localized corrosion, such as crevice or piting corrosion, caused by anionic attack.
