A process for producing a smooth-sided strand-based siding or wood structural panel using a pre-telegraphing process. The pre-telegraphing is performed after the primary process completes pressing and consolidation of the substrate/board. The pre-telegraphing process applies a water spray on the hot board immediately out of the primary process press, and before overlay application. The application of the water spray causes the surface of the board to swell and cure. A settling period follows to allow the top surface particles and strands to swell along with absorption and evaporation of the moisture. This is followed by surface sanding to remove the telegraphing and produce a smooth surface. This may then be followed by lamination of overlay(s). The process is completed by post-lamination treatment and coating of the board.

Process for producing smooth strand-based siding or structural panels

An improved engineered wood product, and related methods, with improved actual and apparent surface quality. The product includes a high basis weight fines layer overlaying a strand matrix base layer, with one or more overlay layers. The fines layer may be placed between the overlay layers, if multiple overlays are present. The configuration of fines layer and overlay layer(s) minimizes the presence of sub-surface imperfections that may result in visible telegraphing on the exposed surface. A light pattern or texture may be embossed on the outermost overlay layer during the pressing process. Additionally, a paint primer layer or coating with added aggregate may be applied to help camouflage inherent sub-surface defects.

Process for manufacturing and finishing improved engineered wood siding

A process for producing a smooth-sided strand-based siding or wood structural panel using a secondary pressing process. The secondary pressing process is performed after the primary process completes pressing and consolidation of the substrate/board. The secondary process applies and cures the overlay after applying a water spray on the hot board immediately out of the primary process press, and before overlay application. The application of the water spray causes the surface of the board to swell and cure. A settling period follows to allow the top surface particles and strands to swell along with absorption and evaporation of the moisture. Process for producing smooth strand-based siding or structural panels using secondary pressing

The method of this invention adheres a low emissivity radiant barrier material to an underlying lignocellulosic substrate within the primary manufacturing operation of the underlying lignocellulosic substrate. Thus, a radiant barrier covered substrate is formed by integrally joining the radiant barrier covering to a mat of lignocellulosic material during consolidation thereof with a first adhesive bonding material to form an underlying substrate. The integral joining operation can, for example, be accomplished by bonding the radiant barrier covering to a lignocellulosic mat in a product formation press. This is typically accomplished using a second adhesive bonding material for adhesion of the radiant barrier material to the lignocellulosic mat, and a first adhesive bonding material for consolidating the lignocellulosic mat to form a lignocellulosic substrate. More specifically, this invention is directed to a method whereby a low emissivity radiant barrier material is joined in situ to a mat of lignocellulosic particles using a second adhesive material, during the consolidation of the lignocellulosic particles and a first adhesive bonding material to form an underlying substrate, an integral laminated radiant barrier covered lignocellulosic product being produced.

Low emissivity products and methods for making same

A method is provided for forming a durable, smooth-sided, multi-layer integral, composite engineered panel. The method typically is directed to first forming a mat comprising a plurality of layers of lignocellulosic strands or wafers. The plurality of layers of lignocellulosic strands or wafers are bonded together by an adhesive material. Then, at least one layer of smaller particles of lignocellulosic material is formed on the mat. This layer of smaller particles is blended together with an adhesive material thereby joining the layer of smaller particles to at least one outer surface of the mat. Next, at least one sheet of paper is joined to an outer layer of smaller particles of lignocellulosic material. This step takes place during the formation of the multi-layer integral, composite engineered panel. Finally, a substantially smooth outer surface is formed, upon pressing, in at least one surfaces of the multi-layer integral, composite engineered panel.
