An alignment guide for positioning a saw guide at a predetermined position on the distal femur is placed on the femur and receives an intramedullary rod inserted in the femur. The guide has an arm for coupling the saw guide block. The guide includes an intercondylar saddle that engages the intercondylar notch of the femur to align the saw guide at a predetermined position proximal to the intercondylar notch.

Alignment guide for a bone cutting block

A technique for producing a highly convoluted surface on a prosthetic device is achieved by applying a layer of aspherical metallic powder on the surface of the device. The metallic powder, which may be the same as or different from the material of the device, is applied in a thickness of up to approximately 200 microns and has a size range of approximately -80 to +635 mesh so as to result in a desirable surface roughness defined by a peak to valley variation of up to approximately 200 microns. A resulting device has an enhanced surface which provides, alternatively, an improved press fit into a receiving bone, or improved cement fixation, or improved reception of a ceramic coating.

Prosthesis with highly convoluted surface

Metal/Composite hybrid orthopedic implants are disclosed that are useful prosthetic devices. The hybrid implant comprises an intraosseous metal portion and an intraosseous composite portion. The composite portion is comprised of filaments nonlinearly disposed to produce a structure of variable modulus along its length. Also disclosed are a variety of means to secure the metal portion to the composite portion. The method of making the various implants is also disclosed.

Metal/composite hybrid orthopedic implants

A sizing assembly for determining the optimum size of a femoral component of a knee prosthesis is placed against the resected distal end of a femur. The assembly includes a body with a flat surface for contacting the resected surface of the femur and feet for engaging the femoral condyles. The assembly further includes a pivoted stylus that slides in the body and engages the anterior femoral cortex. Once the size of the femoral component is determined, a drill bushing corresponding to the femoral component is supported on the body. The drill bushing includes two apertures for guiding a drill to bore pilot holes in the resected femur.

Apparatus for sizing a femoral component

A prosthesis is provided for replacing a bone surface. The prosthesis includes an implant having a surface for abutting a bone, and an augment configured to be attached to the surface of the implant by bone cement to compensate for bone loss. The augment is formed to include an aperture therein defined by an inner wall. The prosthesis also includes a plastic peg coupled to the implant. The peg is configured to enter the aperture formed in the augment and to engage the inner wall of the augment to retain the augment in a spaced apart relation relative to the implant to permit the implant to be installed onto the bone before the bone cement cures. Alternately, the surface of the implant is formed to include an aperture therein, and a plastic retaining ring located in the aperture formed in the surface of the implant. A metal peg is coupled to the augment. The metal peg is configured to enter the aperture formed in the implant and to engage the plastic retaining ring therein to retain the augment in a spaced apart relation relative to the implant.

Method for installing a femoral component

A modular hip prosthesis for the replacement of a portion of the femur is provided. The prosthesis is assembled from a kit that includes a stem member having an upper portion and a lower portion, with the lower portion sized to be received in the femur. The kit also includes a body member that is sized to replace a portion of the femur and is configured to be received over the upper portion of a stem member. The kit also includes a head member that is sized to replace the head of the femur. A neck member is provided to attach the head member to the body member to form an assembled prosthesis.

Modular hip prosthesis

A method of joining a polymeric part and a metallic or ceramic part. The result is a bearing for an orthopedic prosthesis comprising a rigid backing component presenting a mating surface having interstices, a polymeric bearing component having a corresponding mating surface, the bearing component and backing components being joined together by heating the backing component to a temperature sufficient to reduce the viscosity of the bearing component at its mating surface and by forcing the components together with sufficient pressure to cause the bearing component mating surface to flow into the interstices of the backing component mating surface.

Polymeric bearing component

A controlled stiffness elongated implant for use in the hip or other appropriate body joint. In the instance of the hip, a ball member fixed to the femur is rotatably engaged with a cup-shaped socket member fixed to the acetabulum of the pelvic bone. The ball member is mounted on one end of a femoral component which has an elongated stem receivable in the intramedullary canal of the femur. The stem has a generally longitudinally directed reduced mid-stem section. The dimension of the reduced mid-stem section is uniform or variable between the proximal and distal ends so as to affect the mass moment of inertia at any given location along the length of said stem to thereby achieve an optimal stem flexibility.

Load sharing femoral hip implant

A structural joint which may be for orthopedic use is effective to simultaneously resist bending and torsional loading. It includes a female member formed with a cone shaped bore and a mouth defining entry into the bore. A male member matingly engageable with the female member has a contoured outer surface which includes a coupling element sized and shaped for mating engagement with the bore. When the male and female members are joined, the coupling element extends to a location within the bore spaced from the mouth and joins, via a smooth surfaced intermediate element, to a transitional element whose transverse dimension is substantially smaller than the mouth of the bore as it extends through and beyond the mouth. The bore and the coupling element may be mutually tapered such that the male and female members become locked together when engaged.
