An isolator designed through the inclusion of a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) along and at or near an electromagnetic coil. A variety of factors can be balanced to produce an isolator that takes advantage of the radially axial coil. One non-limiting embodiment of the design uses a two-part coil bobbin geometry; wherein the axial center of the bobbin is a nonmagnetic material which allows passage of the magnetic field, while the end pieces are made of a high permeability material that limits the stray magnetic field and improves the magnetic flux density through the MRE by providing a pathway of least magnetic reluctance. The MRE changes stiffness and damping properties in response to the strength of the magnetic field, which can be controlled by changing the current through the electromagnetic coil. Feedback and feedforward control systems can allow for real time adaptation by the isolator in response to changing external stimuli. The isolator is useful for a variety of uses. Non-limiting examples are for reducing whole body vibrations for operators of trucks and heavy machinery, as well as for creating greater comfort for patients in ambulance gurneys and passengers in airplane seats.

A coil configuration and method for transcranial magnetic stimulation enabling stimulation of deep regions of the brain without excessively stimulating the cortex is provided. The coil configuration utilizes at least one coil to produce an off-plane magnetic field to enhance the magnetic field from a top TMS coil. In one configuration at least a single variable position coil referred to as the Variable Halo Coil and positionable vertically and/or angularly is used.

Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation apparatus and method

A coil configuration and method for transcranial magnetic stimulation enabling stimulation of deep regions of the brain without excessively stimulating the cortex is provided. The coil configuration utilizes at least one coil to produce an off-plane magnetic field to enhance the magnetic field from a top TMS coil. In one configuration three coils, referred to as the Triple Halo Coil and oriented at +30&#xb0;, 0&#xb0;, and &#x2212;30&#xb0; relative to the plane of the TMS coil, are used. In another configuration a single variable position coil referred to as the Variable Halo Coil and positionable vertically and/or angularly is used.

The method comprises generating a magnetic field; exposing a material to the magnetic field, and determining the optimum settings of the magnetic field parameters for the particular material. The magnetic field may be time varying or time invariant. Various properties of the magnetic field can be altered to determine the optimum settings for altering the material properties, including the amplitude, frequency, and waveform. In one embodiment, a method for improving the conductivity of a transmission line is provided, comprising: providing a high voltage electrical transmission line; temporarily installing a magnetic field generator along at least a portion of the transmission line; and generating a pulsed magnetic field around at least a portion of the transmission line using the magnetic field generator and simultaneously running a current through the transmission line.

Apparatus and method for altering the properties of materials by processing through the application of a magnetic field

Provided herein are embodiments of a Quadruple Butterfly Coil (QBC) configuration having enhanced focality for stimulation of specific areas of a brain for therapeutic treatment. Finite element simulations were conducted for the QBC, the QBC with a single shield, and the QBC with a double shield. The stimulation profiles for these coil configurations were assessed with 50 anatomically realistic MRI derived head models. The coils were positioned on the vertex and the scalp over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex to stimulate the brain. Computer modeling of the coils was performed to determine volume of stimulation, maximum electric field, location of maximum electric field, and area of stimulation across all 50 head models for both coils.

Quadruple butterfly coil

A particle usable as Tand Tcontrast agents is provided. The particle is a gadolinium silicide (GdSi) particle that is ferromagnetic at temperatures up to 290 K and is less than 2 &#x3bc;m in diameter. An MRI contrast agent that includes a plurality of gadolinium silicide (GdSi) particles that are less than 1 &#x3bc;m in diameter is also provided. A method for creating gadolinium silicide (GdSi) particles is also provided. The method includes the steps of providing a GdSibulk alloy; grinding the GdSibulk alloy into a powder; and milling the GdSibulk alloy powder for a time of approximately 20 minutes or less.

Apparatus and method for altering the properties of fuel by processing through the application of a magnetic field

Magnetostrictive material based on cobalt ferrite is described. The cobalt ferrite is substituted with transition metals (such manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) or mixtures thereof) by substituting the transition metals for iron or cobalt to form substituted cobalt ferrite that provides mechanical properties that make the substituted cobalt ferrite material effective for use as sensors and actuators. The substitution of transition metals lowers the Curie temperature of the material (as compared to cobalt ferrite) while maintaining a suitable magnetostriction for stress sensing applications.

A permanent magnet structure for maximizing the flux density per weight of magnetic material comprising a hollow body flux source for generating a magnetic field in the central gap of the hollow body, the magnetic field having a flux density greater than the residual flux density of the hollow body flux source. The hollow body flux source has a generally elliptic-shape, defined by unequal major and minor axis. These elliptic-shaped permanent magnet structures exhibit a higher flux density at the center gap while minimizing the amount of magnetic material used. Inserts of soft magnetic material proximate the central gap, and a shell of soft magnetic material surrounding the hollow body can further increase the strength of the magnetic field in the central gap by reducing the magnetic flux leakage and focusing the flux density lines in the central gap.

Material for magnetostrictive sensors and other applications based on ferrite materials

The present invention provides Terfenol-D alloys (&ldquo;doped&rdquo; Terfenol) having optimized performances under the condition of time-dependent magnetic fields. In one embodiment, performance is optimized by lowering the conductivity of Terfenol, thereby improving the frequency response. This can be achieved through addition of Group III or IV elements, such as Si and Al. Addition of these types of elements provides scattering sites for conduction electrons, thereby increasing resistivity by 125% which leads to an average increase in penetration depth of 80% at 1 kHz and an increase in energy conversion efficiency of 55%. The permeability of doped Terfenol remains constant over a wider frequency range as compared with undoped Terfenol. These results demonstrate that adding impurities, such as Si and Al, are effective in improving the ac characteristics of Terfenol. A magnetoelastic Gr&uuml;neisen parameter, &ggr;,, has also been derived from the thermodynamic equations of state, and provides another means by which to characterize the coupling efficiency in magnetostrictive materials on a more fundamental basis.
