LED lighting units, materials, and optical components for white light illumination

A light emitting apparatus comprises: an LED-based light source; a spherical, spheroidal, or toroidal diffuser generating a Lambertian light intensity distribution output at any point on the diffuser surface responsive to illumination inside the diffuser; and a base including a base connector. The LED based light source, the diffuser, and the base are secured together as a unitary LED lamp installable in a lighting socket by connecting the base connector with the lighting socket. The diffuser is shaped and arranged respective to the LED based light source in the unitary LED lamp to conform with an isolux surface of the LED based light source. The base is operatively connected with the LED based light source in the unitary LED lamp to electrically power the LED based light source using electrical power received at the base connector.

Composite light sources and methods use a low-blue component light source emitting first substantially white light and a high-blue component light source emitting second substantially white light. The second substantially white light has a greater correlated color temperature than the first substantially white light. The first and second substantially white light combine to provide substantially intermediate warm-white light.

A light emitting apparatus comprising an at least substantially omnidirectional light assembly including an LED-based light source within a light-transmissive envelope. Electronics configured to drive the LED-based light source, the electronics being disposed within a base having a blocking angle no larger than 45&#xb0;. A plurality of heat dissipation elements (such as fins) in thermal communication with the base and extending adjacent the envelope.

LED based lamps are disclosed. In an embodiment, an LED based lamp includes a concave optical diffuser, a concave neodymium-doped glass bulb, a reflector, a printed circuit board that includes a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) configured to emit light, and a heat sink body. The concave optical diffuser has a first interior volume, and the concave neodymium-doped glass bulb is positioned within the first interior volume. The neodymium-doped glass bulb defines a second interior volume, and both the reflector and the printed circuit board are positioned within the second interior volume. The reflector includes a sloped annular wall with an inner reflective surface and an outer reflective surface, and a bottom portion of the reflector is connected to the printed circuit board. The heat sink is thermally connected to the printed circuit board and to the reflector.

A directional lamp comprises a light source, a beam forming optical system configured to form light from the light source into a light beam, and a light mixing diffuser arranged to diffuse the light beam. The light source, beam forming optical system, and light mixing diffuser are secured together as a unitary lamp. The beam forming optical system includes: a collecting reflector having an entrance aperture receiving light from the light source and an exit aperture that is larger than the entrance aperture, and a lens disposed at the exit aperture of the collecting reflector, the light source being positioned along an optical axis of the beam forming optical system at a distance from the lens that is within plus or minus ten percent of a focal length of the lens.

A lighting device that uses one or more LEDs, an optical element (e.g., diffuser), and a heat sink to provide thermal management is provided. The overall shape of the lighting device, particularly the heat sink, can be configured to imitate the appearance of a traditional incandescent candelabra lamp. One or more features are also provided to assist with the conduction of heat away from the LED(s) and to the heat sink. The lighting device can provide improved lumen output and light distribution.

A ceramic arc body includes a main body having a chamber. A leg extends from the main body and has an internal opening therethrough that communicates with the chamber. An electrically non-conductive seal member is received in the leg opening. A tapered internal surface abuttingly engages the seal member and provides for centering of the seal member relative to the leg. A separate tapering region, shoulder, or stop surface limits insertion of the seal member into the leg opening for precision location of the seal member, and in another embodiment, a single continuous taper inside the leg cooperates with a tapered seal member for both centering and precision insertion of the seal member into the leg. In another embodiment, a hybrid electrode is employed where one portion of the hybrid electrode is electrically non-conductive and a second portion of the electrode is electrically conductive. The hybrid electrode mechanically supports both the lamp and the starting coil and also provides electrical connection to the starting coil.
