Foams suitable for such uses as landfill coverage, frost protection, volatile emission control, gas control in mining, are composed of a hydrolyzable protein and a pre-gelatinized cationic modified starch along with other ingredients. The foam concentrate can be made at ambient temperature, is stable over time, can be easily tailored to achieve a desired foam stiffness and drain time characteristic over wide ranges, and can be easily diluted at ambient temperature to produce a foamable composition.

Phenolic resin polyols are disclosed. The polyols, which contain aliphatic or mixed phenolic and aliphatic hydroxyl groups, are the reaction products of aralkylated phenols or phenol aralkylation polymers with an oxyalkylating agent selected from alkylene oxides and alkylene carbonates. The phenolic resin polyols are versatile intermediates for many polymer systems, including urethanes, epoxies, alkyds, acrylates, and polyesters.

Versatile coalescing agents for water-borne coating applications are disclosed. These coalescents efficiently reduce minimum film-forming temperature, and also have a dramatically reduced tendency to swell resins compared with prior art coalescents.
