The web server application can be operable to detect an incoming plain old telephone service call, identify a calling party identifier from the incoming plain old telephone service call, and direct one of a plurality of devices detected by web server application to present the calling party identifier. A system that incorporates the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method for detecting a communication network, broadcasting a query message by way of the communication network, receiving a response message from the communication network, detecting from the response message that a media device is communicatively coupled to the communication network, receiving a key from a remote server to enable communications with the media device, detecting an event requiring use of the media device, generating a command responsive to the event, transmitting to the media device the command to direct the media device to request information from a web server executed by the processor, receiving from the media device a request for information to be provided by the web server, and transmitting to the media device by way of the web server the information requested. Method and apparatus for controlling a media device

Implementation of a virtual service includes connecting a set top box (STB) of a first user to a STB of a second user and a STB of a third user, providing a first video of the first and second users to corresponding STBs, and providing a second video of the first and third users to corresponding STBs. The virtual service also includes displaying the first video on a device of the first user and a device of the second user simultaneously with broadcast content. The virtual service further includes displaying the second video on the device of the first user and on a device of the third user simultaneously with the broadcast content. The displaying is implemented such that the second user and the third user are unaware of the mutual connection to the set top box of the first user.

Methods, computer program products, and virtual servers for a virtual collaborative environment

A method and system implements supplementary media channels to Internet-protocol television (IPTV) channels. An IPTV user may receive a selected IPTV program on an IPTV channel. The IPTV program may be correlated in time with metadata describing the content of the IPTV program. At a point in the IPTV program, the metadata may match with user configuration information for receiving supplemental content. A supplementary media channel may be used at such point to provide the supplemental content to the IPTV user during the IPTV program. Supplemental content may include additional storyline content for the IPTV program or an advertising message, a redeemable coupon, a promotional offer, or an order invitation. The supplementary media channel may include a telephone connection with the IPTV user, an email message, a text message, or an instant message sent to the IPTV user, or a voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) connection with the IPTV user.
