An application programming interface (API) that enables installation of an application as one or more key-value objects on a data storage drive such as a hard disk drive, a solid state drive or a hybrid drive. The API also enables execution of the application within a controlled environment of the data storage drive.

A data storage drive that includes a data storage medium and drive control circuit communicatively coupled to the data storage medium. The data storage drive also includes embedded applet management circuitry that executes an application, installed in the data storage drive as one or more key-value objects, within a controlled environment of the data storage drive.

A storage device has a storage medium, a key generator and a controller. The key generator generates an encryption/decryption key from selected bits of program code within the storage device. The controller controls access to the storage medium and applies the encryption/decryption key to encrypt and decrypt data written to or read from the storage medium.

A disc storage system having a host computer interface adapted to coupled to a host computer, a disc storage medium having a disc surface and a spindle motor coupled to the disc adapted to rotate the disc. A transducer is positioned for reading and writing data on the disc surface. The system further includes a volatile memory write cache and a non-volatile memory write cache adapted to store data during a power loss. A method is also provided for storing data prior to writing the data in a non-volatile memory cache in a disc storage system.

A data format defining a data field having an embedded reading-address subfield and an offset writing-address header allows a transducer having separate read and write elements separated by a gap to perform read and write operations. When reading from the disc, the read element is positioned adjacent the data fields stored on a track. As the data fields pass the read element, the data field addresses stored in the embedded reading-address subfields are compared to a target address. If a match is found, the user data contained in a user data subfield of the matched data field is provided to a controller. When writing to the disc, the read element is positioned adjacent the writing-address headers. The addresses stored in the writing address headers are read and compared to the target address. If a match is found, the user data provided by the controller is written to the user data subfield of the data field associated with the matched writing-address header, and the address of the data field is rewritten to the embedded reading-address subfield of the data field. The data field is offset from the writing-address headers by a magnitude determined by the gap and skew angle.

Data storage format for data storage devices having a radial offset

A disc array includes a plurality of disc drives each having a magnetic disc for storing information, and a drive controller for accessing information on the disc. The drive controller performs array support functions to support the disc array. The drive controllers in each disc drive are coupled to one another so that the drive controllers can communicate to perform array support functions in cooperation with one another. An array controller is coupled to the drive controllers and each of the plurality of disc drives to control overall operation of the disc drives to store and retrieve information from target locations on the magnetic discs in the disc drives.
