A system is provided for use with a video input signal and a video unit. The video input signal can be one of a two dimensional video signal and a three dimensional video signal. The video unit can display a three dimensional video and a two dimensional video. The system includes a receiver portion, a processing portion, a switching portion and an output portion. The receiver portion can receive the video input signal. The processing portion can output a first signal in a first mode of operation and can output a second signal in a second mode of operation, wherein the first signal is based on the video input signal and the second signal is based on the video input signal. The switching portion can switch the processing portion from the first mode of operation to the second mode of operation. The output portion can provide an output signal to the video unit, wherein the output signal is based on the first signal when the processing portion operates in the first mode of operation and wherein the output signal is based on the second signal when the processing portion operates in the second mode of operation. The first signal includes a two dimensional video signal, whereas the second signal includes a three dimensional video signal.

Dual mode user interface system and method for 3D video

A method and system that configures an HDMI source device to use initial output parameters for communicating with an HDMI sink device, detects an abnormal operation performed by the HDMI sink device, selects a test of the HDMI sink device, applies the test, evaluates a result to determine whether the test produces a desired result, and modifies the initial output parameters to create revised output parameters. When the test produces the desired result, the revised output parameters will enable the HDMI sink device to produce the desired result. When the test fails to produce the desired result, the revised output parameters are conservative parameters that fail to produce the abnormal operation. The method reconfigures the HDMI source device to use the revised output parameters for communicating with the HDMI sink device, and saves the revised output parameters.

HDMI source/sink interoperable configuration determination process

In a method of communicating content over a wireless communication link between a base station set-top (BSS) and one or more hosts, where each of the one or more hosts have an interface protocol substantially complying with at least a subset of a copy protection standard, an encrypted signal is at least one of received and stored in the BSS, and the encrypted signal is turned into an encrypted data packet stream. The BSS wirelessly transmits the data packet stream to one or more wireless interface apparatuses (WIAs) which are interfaced with at least one host through the interface protocol. In addition, the WIA forwards the encrypted data packet stream to the one or more hosts through implementation of the interface protocol.

Content communication over a wireless communication link

A tone processing method and communications system which reduce the probability of falsely detecting modem and facsimile communications that occur on a communications link. The link connects a calling endpoint to an answering endpoint. In a preferred embodiment, when the answering endpoint goes off-hook in response to receiving a call from the calling endpoint, an elapse of time is measured while monitoring the link. If a predetermined amount of time elapses without detecting at least one tone on the link, tone detection criteria is modified to reduce tone detection sensitivity, or to ignore tones altogether. In another embodiment, the tone detection criteria is similarly modified if voice activity is detected on the link. In yet another embodiment, when tones and voice activity occur at different times during a call, at least one characteristic is modified to optimize the link for the type of communications occurring on the link.

Method and system for processing tones to reduce false detection of fax and modem communications

A method () and apparatus () enables a customer () to distinguish between a dead or broken Internet Protocol telephone line and an out-of-service Internet Protocol telephone line. The method detects () a hook status of a device () coupled to the IP network () during an out-of-service status of the line. Upon detection of a change in state from an on-hook state to an off-hook state, a message is sent () to the device () indicating that the IP telephone line is currently out-of-service and not dead or broken. This message can be a voice or text message. Moreover, the message can provide status information for all of the interfaces of the device coupled to the IP telephone line. In addition, the message can include information as to how to obtain service, such as a telephone number to call.

Instructive out-of-service telephone lines

A method and system that processes voice and non-voice data is configured to insure that the processing of the voice data is given priority over the processing of the non-voice data, to ensure that callers experience smooth, uninterrupted conversations. An estimate of processing load dedicated to processing only non-voice data is calculated. A plurality of quota data objects are established to monitor and control the allocation of the processing load dedicated to processing only the non-voice data during a current quota period.

Method and system for budgeting resources dedicated to processing non-voice data traffic

A broadband terminal interface unit for use in an HFC communication network includes a phase-locked loop for providing a smooth transition between a CMTS-provided 'national' clock and a local clock when the CMTS clock is lost (or before it is required). By controlling the tracking range of the PLL, the sensitivity of the circuit is controlled so that some drift in the national clock can be accommodated without unnecessarily reducing the performance of the components within the broadband terminal interface unit.

Arrangement for deriving a local clock in a packet cable telephony modem

To set up a conference call which includes two, three or more participants, when the participating residential gateways (RGs) lack the necessary capability, a call agent designates a capable residential gateway RG, such as an embedded or stand-alone multi-media terminal adapter (eMTA or MTA) or a cable modem voice (CM), to serve as a residential conference mixer (RCM). The call agent routes outbound voice traffic from the participating RGs to the RCM, which mixes the traffic from the RGs participating in the conference call and directs the mixed voice traffic to the participating RGs. The call agent monitors the RGs for information useful to determine availability for conferencing.

Method and apparatus for providing telephone conference bridging within a residential gateway

An arrangement for controlling multiple telephone lines terminating in a single residence uses a multiplexer within a communications gateway and a plurality of demultiplexers, each demultiplexer coupled to a separate one of telephone lines. The communications gateway functions to convert all received analog telephony signals into a digital format and then multiplexes the digital signals onto a single telephone line connected to the residence. The various telephone lines in the residence are connected in series along the line, using a number of drop-off points. The demultiplexer on each telephone line is configured to recognize the time slots within the multiplexed signal destined for its associated telecommunications device. In a similar fashion, separate time slots are assigned for upstream transmission from each telecommunication device into the HFC network.

Arrangement for managing multiple telephone lines terminating at a single location

In one embodiment, a test tone is placed in an outbound path of a full-duplex transmission system. An echo cancellation capability is disabled, enabling an echo signal of the test tone to pass through the inbound path of the full-duplex transmission system, which echo signal is analyzed to determine the condition of the full-duplex paths. In another embodiment a standard DSP generates DTMF tones which are looped-back and tested by the DSP, under control of a CPU. The DSP is a standard DSP avoiding the need for any hardware/software modification of the DSP to perform the test mode. The tests are performed the local level, i.e. at the subscriber's location, eliminating the need for central office intervention, for example.

Method and apparatus for performing either tone analysis on a local looped-back communications path or utilizing a hybrid reflection based looped-back test to test integrity

A method and apparatus is provided for use in providing real-time, packet-switched service to an end-user over a cable data network. The method begins by transmitting over the cable data network a scheduled grant to an end-user gateway in accordance with an unsolicited grant service protocol. The grant authorizes the end-user gateway to transmit a data packet to a cable modem termination system (CMTS) located in the cable data network. Next, an adjustment is made to the time at which subsequent grants are transmitted. The adjustment, which is based on a response of the end-user gateway, is performed to reduce delay between a time when a subsequent data packet is generated and receipt of the subsequent grant.

Method and apparatus for reducing end-to-end delay when providing internet telephony over a CATV cable network

A television electronic program guide intelligent memory management system and method automatically deletes the least valuable stored program information at that moment as free memory space is needed by the system. In advance of a program schedule update, the system executes a two-level memory 'housekeeping' operation in which the system first scans the memory to identify obsolete schedule information. If, after this sweep, there is insufficient memory available for the next update, the system performs a second-level memory 'triage' operation wherein schedule information is automatically prioritized in accordance with pre-defined rules for assessing the current value of the information to each viewer based on program air time, channel and other variables relating to program utility. The system then deletes schedule information in ascending order of value, starting with the least valuable information, and continues until enough space is available in memory to store the schedule update.
