Systems and method are provided for an internal combustion engine with boosted operation. In an example, this includes operating the engine with boosted intake pressure via a supercharger and with supercharger flow regulated by a vacuum actuated bypass valve, and in response to a supercharger outlet temperature greater than a first threshold, increasing a blow through air passing from the engine intake to engine exhaust without combustion in a cylinder of the engine due to engine intake and exhaust valves having positive valve overlap; and then in response to the supercharger outlet temperature greater than a second, higher, threshold, limiting engine airflow.

Supercharger pressure ratio and temperature limiting scheme to protect hardware

Methods and systems are provided for improving surge control in a boosted engine system configured with an electric motor to provide electrical boost assistance. Tip-in and tip-out surge are addressed by increasing the opening of a compressor recirculation valve and coordinating the recirculation valve opening with adjustments to an exhaust waste-gate position and a power output by the electric motor. The adjustments enable an intake airflow to be provided that operates the compressor outside a surge region while providing a target boost pressure as operator torque demand increases or decreases.

Methods and systems are provided for expediting charging of a battery before entry into a zero emissions zone. In one example, the battery is charged with a ratio of motor torque drawn from a first electric motor of an electric turbocharger and a second electric motor of an HEV driveline. The ratio is coordinated with adjustments to an exhaust waste-gate and an intake throttle so as to maintain operator torque demand and propel the vehicle while charging the battery.

Methods and systems are provided for coordinated control of a compound boosting system, including a first compressor staged upstream of a second compressor in an engine intake. In one example, a method may include operating the second, downstream compressor in steady-state to achieve an overall pressure ratio across the compound boosting system while operating the first, upstream compressor transiently, based on an airflow shortfall at the downstream compressor. A timing and amount of electric assistance provided to transiently operate the first, upstream compressor may be adjusted dynamically as the pressure ratio across the second compressor changes.

Methods and systems are provided for warming an engine and/or engine fluids. In one example, a method may comprise powering on an electric motor of an intake boost device to generate heat, circulating coolant and/or engine oil through the boost device to absorb the heat produced by the boost device, and then flowing the coolant and/or engine oil to the engine to transfer the heat absorbed from the boost device to the engine. In this way, an engine may be warmed without running the engine rich by using the heat generated by the electric motor of the boost device to warm the engine.

A marine vessel comprises an elongated hull that extends along a center axis from an aftward end to a forward end. A first transom portion and a second transom portion are located closer to the aftward end than the forward end. A first propulsion device is connected to the first transom portion and steerable about a first steering axis. A second propulsion device is connected to the second transom portion and steerable about a second steering axis. The first and second transom portions each has a mounting face that is set at a non-perpendicular outboard angle to the center axis. A controller is configured to steer the first and second propulsion devices inwardly towards a center of pressure of the marine vessel so that during certain lateral translations of the marine vessel the first and second propulsion devices can provide thrusts along axes that intersect aftwardly of the center of pressure.

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting a compressor recirculation valve in response to condensate forming conditions in a charge air cooler (CAC). In one example, a compressor recirculation valve may be opened in response to an induction pressure greater than a threshold pressure when the induction pressure is greater than required to produce a manifold pressure required for a torque demand. Further, a wastegate may be opened to further reduce the induction pressure during certain driving conditions.

Embodiments for controlling boost pressure in a turbocharged engine are provided. In one embodiment, a method for an engine having a throttle comprises, if an inferred throttle inlet pressure (TIP) value is different than a measured TIP value, adjusting a wastegate of a turbocharger based on the inferred TIP value and not based on the measured TIP value, the inferred TIP value based on air flow through the throttle, throttle angle, and manifold absolute pressure (MAP). In this way, boost pressure control may be provided by the inferred TIP value under some conditions.

Embodiments for vacuum generation are provided. In one example, a method comprises when boost is below a threshold, generating vacuum with an actuator in a first position by flowing air from a compressor outlet to an intake manifold through a first ejector, and when boost is above the threshold, generating vacuum with the actuator in a second position by flowing air from the compressor outlet to a compressor inlet through a second ejector. In this way, vacuum may be generated by more than one ejector via actuation of a common actuator.
