Apparatus, system, and method for enabling eye-to-eye contact in video conferences. In general, the system and apparatus employ means for generating video images corresponding to real images that would be produced if a video camera were disposed at or behind a video display having a field of view directed toward a target object such as a participant. An image (either real, reflected, or holographic) is formed based on light reflected off of the target object, and object light corresponding to the image is received by the video camera, which produces a video signal containing the image. Typically, the means for generating the video images employs direct imaging, reflective imaging, or holographic imaging. The means for generating the video images are also configured in such a manner as to be substantially transparent to video conference participants viewing the display images on the video display. A similar configuration is deployed at two or more conference rooms, thereby enabling participants to communicate with one another using eye-to-eye contact.

Apparatus, system and method for enabling eye-to-eye contact in video conferences

A holographic optical element (HOE) device is mounted in wireless optical telecommunication system transceiver. The HOE device includes a developed emulsion material having an interference pattern recorded thereon, sandwiched between a pair of elements, such as a pair of clear glass plates. In operation, the HOE device uses the recorded interference pattern to diffract received light rays towards an optical processing unit of the system receiver. A transmitter unit can be positioned at least in part behind the HOE device. An opening in the emulsion material allows a light signal transmitted from the transmitter unit to be substantially unaffected by the recorded interference pattern. The transceiver can also include a spotting scope and an alignment beacon.

Transceiver for a wireless optical telecommunication system

An integrated optical component and FSO transceiver using the same. In one embodiment, the integrated optical component comprises a monolithic substrate having a plurality of optics formed therein, including a receiver optic, transmitter optic, a pickoff lens, and a pair of total internal reflection (TIR) fold mirrors. The receiver optic directs a majority of an incoming optical signal towards a data detector, while a small portion of the optical signal passes through the pickoff lens, is redirected by a first TIR fold mirror towards a second TIR fold mirror, and is then redirected towards a optical beam position sensor. In another embodiment, a plurality of tracking lenses and respective TIR fold mirrors are disposed around the periphery of the receiver optic. Portions of the incoming optical signal are received by the tracking lenses, redirected by the TIR fold mirrors toward a TIR combiner and then towards a beam position sensor.

Integrated optic component for binocular FSO transceiver

An apparatus and method determines light transmission through a window. The window may be a single-pane or a double-pane window, and may or may not have coatings on its interior/exterior surfaces. Light transmission through the window can be measured based on power levels of light incident on the window and light reflected from the window. Such measurements can be performed for a wireless optical telecommunication system, in situations where it may be difficult or impossible to access both sides of a window to place or retrieve measurement equipment.

Apparatus and method to measure light attenuation through a window

A cover plate on a holographic optical element (HOE) device corrects for aberrations, such as spherical aberrations. The HOE device includes an emulsion material, having a recorded interference pattern that can perform diffraction, sandwiched between a first element and a second element, wherein the second element functions as the cover plate. One of the surfaces of the second element is aspheric to correct for aberrations. The aspheric shape of the surface adds approximately equal and approximately opposite aberrations associated with light rays diffracted by the recorded interference pattern, thereby substantially improving focus.
