Method and means for automatically controlling chlor-alkali cells are described. Control is exercised on the basis of a mass flow analysis, starting from a target caustic concentration for the catholyte output, to establish individual set points for optimum cell system operating conditions so as to achieve said target output value. Such control is accomplished by a central automatic control unit which is adapted to monitor the operation of the cell and its associated brine and caustic output subsystems and to institute appropriate corrective actions whenever a tolerance band around one or more of said set points is exceeded. The control unit is further adapted to provide daily and weekly operating summaries and to store said summaries for trends analyses to establish the scope and significance of any long-term degradative processes which might be occurring.

A method of electrometrically monitoring the pH of an electrolyte in an electrolytic cell with a pH sensor having a reference electrode with a porous membrane is provided by placing the pH sensor in the electrolyte flow stream, floating the reference electrode at the cell potential, and monitoring the pH sensor readings via potential measuring apparatus.

A method for assembling a filter press type of electrolytic cell is disclosed wherein tightening apparatus is employed at preferably multiple points about the periphery of the stacked electrodes to substantially simultaneously apply a substantially uniform pressure to compress the cell to permit the compressed stack of electrodes to be retained in this compressed state while the cell is assembled in a fluid-tight manner.

Portable method for filter press cell assembly

In an electrolytic filter press cell having an electrolyte fluid circulated through anode and cathode frames, a cell frame at least partially supporting an anolyte disengager and a catholyte disengager, the disengagers having at least a first flow conduit and a second flow conduit in fluid flow communication with each electrode, there is provided a variable flow restrictor in the first flow conduit from the disengagers to each electrode frame to selectively vary the flow rate of electrolyte through the disengagers to thereby control the level of foaming of the electrolyte within the disengagers to optimize the amount of gas separated out therein.

A method of varying the flow in a flow conduit from both the anolyte disengager and the catholyte disengager to each appropriately corresponding electrode is provided to selectively vary the flow rate of electrolyte fluids through the disengagers to the appropriate electrodes to thereby control the level of foaming of the electrolyte fluids within the disengagers to prevent the blowover of foam during the separation of entrained gas from the electrolyte fluids therein.
