A method of operating a vehicle including an engine includes suspending operation of the engine during operation of the vehicle including stopping fueling of the engine. The method includes accelerating the engine to a high-speed starting speed with fueling of the engine stopped and a cylinder decompression mechanism activated, the high-speed starting speed being greater than an idle speed of the engine. The method includes resuming operation of the engine including deactivating the cylinder decompression mechanism at the high-speed starting speed and thereafter restarting fueling of the engine.

Provided is a system having a hybrid powertrain having a piston internal combustion engine, and a motor/generator, and the motor generator being coupleable to a clutch and thereby a gearbox, the engine further being equipped with a valvetrain control system operable to change the engine valve operation between a first mode in which the engine can operate in a conventional internal combustion mode and a second mode in which pumping losses are reduced when the engine is not operating in a conventional internal combustion mode.

A hybrid powertrain system includes: an engine; a motor/generator ('MG'); a clutch coupled to the engine and the MG; a transmission coupled to the MG; an energy storage system connected to the MG; and a controller coupled to the engine, the MG, the clutch, the transmission and the energy storage system. The controller is configured to initiate an engine stop, allow engine torque and MG torque to reduce to zero or near zero, shift the transmission to a neutral gear, cause the MG to operate in a generator mode, thereby loading the engine to recover kinetic energy from the engine, disengage the clutch to decouple the MG from the engine, increase the speed of the MG to a target speed, and shift the transmission into gear in response to the MG reaching the target speed.

Method and system for kinetic energy recovery in a hybrid powertrain during engine shutdown

A controller for controlling flow of coolant to one or more components of a vehicle is disclosed. The controller determines respective amounts of heat expected to be rejected by the one or more components of the vehicle in a steady state of operation at current operating conditions of the one or more components, and generates a feedforward flow control signal based at least in part on the determined amounts of heat and a target temperature for the one or more components. The controller generates a controller output signal based at least in part on the feedforward control signal, and provides the controller output signal to the cooling system to control flow of coolant to the one or more components of the vehicle from the cooling system in accordance with the determined amounts of heat expected to be rejected by the one or more components of the vehicle.

Systems and method for controlling flow of coolant to components of a vehicle

Examples of hybrid powertrain systems are provided herein. The system includes: an engine; a motor/generator ('MG'); a clutch coupled to the engine and the MG; a transmission coupled to the MG; an energy storage system connected to the MG; and a controller coupled to the engine, the MG, the clutch, the transmission and the energy storage system. An injector combustion shield assembly comprising a bore configured to receive a fuel injector, the bore including a fluid opening in fluid communication with a fluid jacket and a fluid outlet positioned within an annular wall of the bore; and a valve positioned between the fluid jacket and the fluid opening and configured to selectively permit a fluid from the fluid jacket to enter the bore, the valve being movable between an open configuration to permit fluid flow from the fluid jacket into the bore via the fluid opening and a closed configuration to prevent fluid flow from the fluid jacket into the bore.

A method of reducing carbonaceous deposits on a fuel injector is provided in which a first fuel composition is supplied to the fuel injector in a dual fuel engine, the first fuel composition comprising natural gas fuel and a first percentage of diesel fuel; and a second fuel composition is supplied to the fuel injector in a dual fuel engine, the second fuel composition comprising a second percentage of diesel fuel that is greater than the first percentage of diesel fuel to cause cavitation to occur within the fuel injector, thereby reducing carbonaceous deposits.
