A variable compression connecting rod system () located in an internal combustion engine () and a method of assembly can include a connecting rod () mountable to a piston pin () having a first longitudinal axis at one end andmountable to a crankpin () having a second longitudinal axis at a second end portion (). A hydraulically actuated eccentric rotor () rotatable about one of the first and second longitudinal axis. The eccentric rotor () including first and second vanes () for driving the rotor between first and second angular positions in response to fluid pressure acting on the first and second vanes. The eccentric rotor() having an eccentric surface area with different radial distances () movable into alignment with a longitudinal axis of the connecting rod () for varying a longitudinal length of the connecting rod () between the first and second longitudinal axis.

According to one implementation of an engine system, a power device is selectively actuated to provide energy to a storage device. In one form, the power device may be a source of electrical energy and the storage device is capable of storing an electrical charge. A system for supplying supplemental heat to a vehicle, particularly a vehicle with a diesel engine, A driven viscous plate with different viscous clutch faces on either side is provided between the engine and the coolant pump. One side clutches to the engine structure (ground) to generate heat, and the other side clutches to the coolant pump to vary the pump drive. The two sides are controlled by a valve operated by signals from the engine computer. The valve varies the supply of viscous fluid from a common reservoir independently to both sides of the driven viscous plate. The signal from the engine control unit is based on the instantaneous desired supplemental heat and coolant flow. In another embodiment, two separate viscous clutches are utilized and positioned on opposite sides of the coolant pump.

A variable cam timing system for an engine with at least one camshaft comprising: a housing, a rotor, and a controlled bypass. The housing has an outer circumference for accepting drive force and chambers. The rotor has a connection to a camshaft coaxially located within the housing. The housing and the rotor define at least one vane separating a chamber in the housing into advance and retard chambers. The vane is capable of rotation to shift the relative angular position of the housing and the rotor. The controlled bypass provides fluid communication between the chambers. When the valve is closed, the valve blocks passage between the chambers and when the valve is open fluid flows through the passage extending between the advance chamber to the retard chamber. A method for reducing the valve event is also disclosed.

The method provides hydraulic pressure for mechanical work from an engine lubricating system in an internal combustion engine by supplying oil to an engine lubrication gallery for lubricating the engine and to at least one variable oil demand accessory. Each of the variable oil demand accessories has an individual pressure regulator. The output of the variable displacement pump is regulated based on the sum of fluid flow required by the engine lubricating system and the engine accessories, regardless of the engine output. The demand for fluid is determined by the individual pressure regulators on each of the engine accessories. In a preferred embodiment, an accumulator stores high-pressure fluid to be used to power the hydraulic accessories.

System and method of providing hydraulic pressure for mechanical work from an engine lubricating system

The present invention relates to a piston adapted for reciprocal movement within the cylinders of an internal combustion engine. The piston includes a body having a crown formed at the uppermost margins of the body and a skirt, depending from the crown, adapted for relative sliding motion with respect to the cylinder. The piston further includes a coating bonded to the piston skirt so as to be juxtaposed between the skirt and the cylinder. The coating has a plurality of recesses formed thereon so as to define a predetermined pattern of recesses on the surface of the skirt that retains lubricant between the skirt and the cylinder wall. The coating may also direct lubricant along the outer circumference of the piston skirt during reciprocal movement of the piston within a cylinder. A method of applying the coating to the piston skirt is also disclosed.
