Method and apparatus for femoral and tibial resection

Systems for use in total knee arthroplasty include a cutting guide having only a single slot. The single slot is configured to be positioned adjacent an anterior side of the medial compartment of the knee joint with no portion positioned adjacent an anterior side of the lateral compartment of the knee joint. The single slot is adapted to guide an oscillating saw blade across the knee bone from the medial compartment to resect at least a portion of the lateral compartment. The system also includes a total knee arthroplasty implant adapted to be implanted on the resected surface.

Methods and apparatus for orthopedic implants

Methods and apparatus for knee arthroplasty utilize components including an alignment device, a single medially or laterally located guidance device, and a cutting device for use in preparing the bones of a knee joint to receive knee arthroplasty implants. The alignment device is used to locate and orient the guidance device adjacent the medial or lateral side of a long bone of a knee joint. The cutting device is engaged with the guidance device and plunged across the end of the long bone to create a resected surface with respect to which a knee arthroplasty implant will be fixed. In one embodiment, the cutting tool guidance device extends less than about half way across the end of a long bone of a knee joint.

Methods and apparatus for femoral and tibial resection

An implant is provided for which has an outer bearing surface and an inner attachment surface. The outer bearing surface functions as ajoint contact surface for a reconstructed bone joint. The inner attachment surface contacts a bone and is attached thereto. The inner attachment surface of the implant is curvilinear from the anterior to the posterior area of the femur, and is also curvilinear from the medial to the lateral areas of the femur to approximates the shape of natural femur. The resection of the femur for accommodating the implant can be properly performed by a milling device employing one or more curvilinear milling bits.

A method and apparatus is provided for cutting bone. In one embodiment, a femur is resected by means of pattern plates having a cutting path with at least two continuous, non-coplanar guide surfaces. The cutting path has a similar profile to the interior profile of a femoral prosthesis. The cutting path guides a reciprocating, oscillating, or rotating cutting tool along a path for removing material from some or all of the distal femur to accept a distal femoral prosthesis. The cutting tool can be a cylindrical milling bit, and can even have a curvilinear profile to cut bone such that it has a three dimensional profile in cross section. Pattern plates can also be used to cut or remove material from other bones.

An implant is provided for which has an outer bearing surface and an inner attachment surface. The outer bearing surface functions as a joint contact surface for a reconstructed bone joint. The inner attachment surface contacts a bone and is attached thereto. The inner attachment surface of the implant is curvilinear from the anterior to the posterior area of the femur, and is also curvilinear from the medial to the lateral areas of the femur to approximates the shape of natural femur. The resection of the femur for accommodating the implant can be properly performed by a milling device employing one or more curvilinear milling bits.

A method an apparatus for resecting a proximal tibia during a knee replacement operation is provided. The apparatus includes an ankle clamp, an alignment rod, a fixation head, cutting guide clamps having cutting guide slots therein, and a milling bit. The method includes the steps of attaching the ankle clamp about the ankle, interconnecting the distal end of the alignment rod with the ankle clamp, interconnecting the fixation head with the proximal end of the alignment rod, partially attaching the fixation head to the proximal tibia, aligning the alignment rod, completely attaching the fixation head to the proximal tibia, interconnecting the cutting guide clamps with the alignment rod, positioning the cutting guide clamps about the proximal tibia, securing the cutting guide clamps to the tibia at a proper location, removing the fixation head, placing the milling bit within the cutting guide slots, and cutting the proximal tibia with the milling bit.

Method and apparatus for tibial resection

The apparatus of the present invention includes a number of components including a guide body component, an extension block component, a rotating arm component, an extension rod component, and a tibial referencing component. The guide body component contacts the distal-most surface of the femur. Its location is based off of the posterior femoral condyles and the surface of the distal-most femoral resection or the unresected distal-most femoral surface. The rotating arm component is interconnected with the guide body and may rotate with respect thereto, thus allowing for the direct or indirect adjustment of the rotating alignment of cutting guides for resecting the distal femur. The rotating arm component carries arms with drill screw apertures which direct placement of drill holes in the femur which are used to attach a cutting guide to the femur. The rotating arm component is attached to the extension rod component which extends to the tibial referencing component which references the location and orientation of the proximal resected surface of the tibia. Thus the rotating alignment of the distal femoral prosthesis is established with respect to the orientation of the resected proximal tibial surface.

Method and apparatus for femoral resection alignment

A distal femur resecting apparatus for use in the preparation of a human distal femur for the implantation of a human femoral prosthesis. The resecting apparatus includes a positioning apparatus and a pattern device. The positioning apparatus includes a positioning block for attachment to a femur, an adjustment block having an intermedullary rod extending into the femur, and a rotational alignment device for attachment of the pattern device to the positioning apparatus. The pattern device comprises an individual or pair of mediolaterally located plates having a cutting path described therethrough similar in shape to the interior profile of a human femoral prosthesis. The cutting path guides a reciprocating, oscillating, or rotating cutting tool along a path for removing material from some or all of the distal femur to shape the distal femur to accept a distal femoral prosthesis.
