A machine for winding and boxing wound coils of filamentary material having a payout hole extending from the outer to the inner coil winding wherein a turret mechanism mounting two oppositely disposed end forms and corresponding collapsible mandrels and operative between first and second stations, wherein the first station enables filamentary material to be wound on one of the mandrels and associated end form and a second station wherein the mandrel and end form containing the wound coil is rotated to confront a boxing station; a boxing station including a platform having a movable back panel, a base panel and an inclined ramp facing the second station and being movable towards and away from the second station for receiving the wound coil from the collapsible mandrel; the boxing station receiving an unfolded box deposited on the base panel with a back panel folded against said back panel and including means for folding two opposite side panels of the box to enable reception of the wound coil in the partially assembled box; payout tube inserting means for inserting a payout tube in the payout hole of the wound coil through a payout hole in the top panel of the box and including means for grasping the free end of the wound coil and withdrawing it through the payout tube; and the boxing station including means for folding, gluing and sealing the flaps of the box.

Machine for boxing wound coils of filamentary material

High speed traversing mechanism and method for winding filamentary material onto a rotating mandrel, wherein an indexer including a crank arm rotatable about a pivot point; a connecting rod connected to the crank arm at a second pivot point; a traverse guide connected to the connecting rod at a third pivot point located on the center line of the traverse guide and the traverse guide reciprocating within a support with rotation of the crank arm; the pivot point is positioned at a point on said center line spaced from the third pivot point; the connecting rod forming a given angle with the center line; the indexer means rotating the rotatable crank arm to displace the traverse guide along the center line within the support; and controlling the indexer to wind the filamentary material onto the mandrel.

High speed dual head on-line winding apparatus

Winding method and apparatus for consecutively winding filamentary material (FM) on respective first and second mandrels, wheerein first and second independently operable spindles are mounted for rotation about respective parallel-spaced axes located in a horizontal plane of a winding apparatus frame; first and second mandrels are removably mounted respectively on each of the first and second spindles; a traverse mechanism mounted to the apparatus frame for movement between the parallel-spaced axes and for reciprocating movement along an axis parallel to, and spaced from, the parallel-spaced axes; independently rotating each of the first and second spindles; moving a traverse guide in cooperation with the independent rotation to consecutively wind FM on the first and second mandrels; transfer mechanism movably mounted to the apparatus frame for guiding FM from at least one of a first and second mandrel each having FM wound thereon to at least one of a second and first empty mandrel; and for each the first and second mandrels, a transfer arm pivotable about a pivot point adjacent the respective mandrel for guiding the FM onto a respective one of the first and second mandrels during transfer of the FM from a mandrel having FM wound thereon to an empty mandrel; and controlling the independent rotation, reciprocation and the transfer mechanism for moving the traverse guide adjacent at least one of the first empty and second empty mandrel in coordination with rotation of that transfer arm associated with the mandrel to which FM is to be transfered for winding onto an empty mandrel.

High speed, dual head, on-line winding apparatus

A winding accumulator system for controlling the storage of filamentary material between a source of such material and a winding receptacle, utilizing: a plurality of serially interconnected accumulator units for storing filamentary material with the first accumulator unit receiving filamentary material from the source and storing a given amount of filamentary material and each succeeding accumulator unit storing double the amount of filamentary material stored by a preceding accumulator unit; varying the movement of the filamentary material between the accumulator units; and controlling the movement varying device to limit the change in tension of the filamentary material with changes in the acceleration or deceleration of the filamentary material caused by a change in the input or output of filamentary material to or from the accumulator system.
