According to one embodiment of the present invention, a level of a first hierarchy and a second hierarchy of data attributes is determined where the first hierarchy and the second hierarchy share the determined level and each subordinate hierarchical level. The embodiment further removes from a set of tuples of a database operation at least one tuple that lacks corresponding data in a data source based on the tuple containing elements corresponding to non-intersecting sets of attributes at the determined level. Embodiments of the present invention include a method, system and computer program product for reducing tuple sets in substantially the same manner described above.

Tuple reduction for hierarchies of a dimension

Techniques are disclosed for generating a dimensional query that includes dimensional and relational constructs. A report specification for retrieving data from a dimensional data model is received. The report specification includes the dimensional and relational constructs. The dimensional query is generated from the report specification, based on a predetermined sequence of applying the dimensional and relational constructs.

Viewing a dimensional cube as a virtual data source

A multidimensional query results processing system for translating output of an execution of a multidimensional query into a data result set that reflects the semantics of an entity/relationship schema report specification is provided. The system comprises a result set description generation module for producing a result set description that reflects the semantics of the report specification, a tabular row generation module for converting the results of the single multi-dimensional query into a collection of rows of data, a tabular summary level calculation module for calculating a summarization level of a row a data, a tabular header row generation module for producing a header row to include in the row of data, and a cross-tabulated result generation module for converting the results of the single multi-dimensional query into a result set that matches the semantics of the report specification.

System and method of multidimensional query results processing

An enterprise business intelligence system includes a data access service. In one example, a method comprises receiving, with a data access service, a query and a report specification from an application, wherein the data access service is positioned between the application and a data source; creating a run tree that comprises a sequence of executable decoration nodes; executing the query on the data source, thereby providing a query result set comprising query results drawn from the data source that are responsive to the query; and executing the sequence of decoration nodes on the query result set. The decoration nodes modify the query result set, thereby producing a decorated result set based on the query result set and the decoration nodes. Producing the decorated result set comprises associating members or values in the query results with corresponding positions or calculated members in the report specification.

Transformation of complex data source result sets to normalized sets for manipulation and presentation

A query that is based on a predefined format of an arbitrary query language is received. A data analyzing component performs the query to obtain a query result. The query result and a report layout specification are provided from the data analyzing component to a data processing component, the data processing component being on a computer. The data processing component associates the query result with at least one element of the report layout specification to generate an association. The query result is provided from the data processing component through an interface based on the report layout specification without reliance on the type of the arbitrary query language to a rendering component. The report layout specification is provided from the data analyzing component to the rendering component to render the query result in a report according to the association without reliance on the type of the arbitrary query language.

Ready to render business intelligence result sets

A member unique name (MUN) system and MUN translation system and method are provided. The MUN system comprises a dimension reference for defining the context in which the remaining portions of the MUN exist and a canonical business key for uniquely identifying a member across different dimensional data sources within a business enterprise. The MUN translation system comprises a translation selection module for selecting a MUN transformation and a collection of MUN transformations for transforming a MUN of a first data source into a MUN of the second data source.

System and method of member unique names

A method of transforming queries based upon an entity/relationship schema into multi-dimensional expression queries is provided. The method comprises matching an object referenced in an entity/relationship schema based report specification to a corresponding object in the entity/relationship schema, the corresponding object adorned with associated multidimensional metadata; adding the associated multi-dimensional metadata to the object referenced in the entity/relationship schema based report specification; translating the entity/relationship schema based report specification into a multi-dimensional expression query; and retrieving directly all data required to populate a report output of the entity/relationship schema report specification.

Method of transforming queries based upon E/R schema into multi-dimensional expression queries

A member unique name (MUN) structure and MUN translation system and method are provided. The MUN structure comprises a canonical business key for uniquely identifying a member across different dimensional data sources within a business enterprise and at least one of a dimension reference for defining the context in which the remaining portions of the MUN exist or a data source identifier (DSI) for uniquely identifying a member within a dimensional data source that implements its own unique member identifiers. The MUN translation system comprises a translation selection module for selecting a MUN transformation and a collection of MUN transformations for transforming a MUN structure of a first data source into a MUN structure of the second data source. The collection of MUN transformations comprises at least one of a different source technology OLAP to OLAP transformation for transforming a third OLAP MUN to a fourth OLAP MUN or a Dimensionally Modelled Relational (DMR) to OLAP transformation for transforming a DMR MUN to an OLAP MUN. The third OLAP MUN and fourth OLAP MUN are of different source technologies. The method comprises the steps of selecting a MUN transformation and transforming a MUN of a first data source into a MUN of the second data source. The step of transforming comprises at least one of the steps of transforming a first OLAP MUN to a second OLAP MUN, the first OLAP MUN and second OLAP MUN are of different source technologies or transforming a DMR MUN to an OLAP MUN.
