Certain aspects relate to systems and techniques for localizing and/or navigating a medical instrument within a luminal network. A medical system can include an elongate body configured to be inserted into the luminal network, as well as an imaging device positioned on a distal portion of the elongate body. The system may include memory and processors configured to receive from the imaging device image data that includes an image captured when the elongate body is within the luminal network. The image can depict one or more branchings of the luminal network. The processor can be configured to access a machine learning model of one or more luminal networks and determine, based on the machine learning model and information regarding the one or more branchings, a location of the distal portion of the elongate body within the luminal network.

Systems and methods for localization based on machine learning

Systems, methods and devices for detecting a concussive event are provided. A computational classifier may be trained and utilized for detecting a concussive event in real-time. Head kinematics can be measured and a head kinematic metric determined, which can be utilized within the classifier to detect a concussive event.

Systems, devices, and methods for assessment of brain injury

Devices, systems, and methods for shock absorption are provided herein. Collapsible shock absorption devices have an inner wall having at least one orifice, an outer wall, and a fluid sealed within the outer wall can mitigate sharp increases in force during loading and can better distribute loading forces. In some cases, collapsible shock absorption devices disclosed herein are used for prevention of injury to a biological tissue of a subject or damage to an inanimate object.

Methods and devices for controlling a shapeable medical device

A protective impact device is provided that produces an approximately constant force during compression. The device distinguishes several structural features. First, the cross-sectional area in between two impact surfaces increases over the stroke distance when compression takes place. Second, a compressible fluid containing vessel, held in between two impact surfaces, defines an outer shape with a positive second derivative slope defined from one impact surface towards the other impact surface. Third, orifices allow the fluid to bleed out from the compressible vessel when an impact force causes compression of the protective impact device. The resulting approximately constant force scales more or less linearly with impact energy, regardless of impact velocity caused by the impact force. Applications include athletic equipment, automotive bumpers, aircraft landing gear, and any other application that would benefit from maximum energy absorption during an impact.

Autonomous closed loop control of a flexible tendon-driven continuum manipulator having a sensor at a distal tip is performed by measuring spatial attributes of a sensor at the distal tip and estimating an orientation of a base of an articulating region of the flexible tendon-driven continuum manipulator from a kinematic model and the spatial attributes of the sensor. The manipulator control in a task space uses the estimated orientation, a desired trajectory in the task space, and the position of the sensor at the distal tip. The sensor at the distal tip may be a magnetic sensor, impedance sensor, or optical sensor.

Method for navigating a robotic surgical catheter

A method includes receiving position information and force information, providing control commands to a steering mechanism of a continuum manipulator based on the position information and the force information, updating a control matrix based on the position information and the provided control commands, and providing updated control commands to the steering mechanism based on the updated control matrix. A continuum manipulator includes a body, a steering mechanism configured to steer the body, sensors, and a controller. The sensors include a position sensor to detect a position of the body and a force sensor to detect a force against the body. The controller is configured to receive position information from the position sensor and force information from the force sensor, provide control commands to the steering mechanism based on the position information and the force information, and update a control matrix based on the position information and the provided control commands.

Position/force control of a flexible manipulator under model-less control

Provided is a device for placement on a human subject to detect impacts on the human subject. The device includes a base member, one or more engagement sensors to detect whether the device is properly placed on the human subject, and one or more motion sensors to detect the kinematics of the human subject. The device also includes a processing unit that includes methodology to detect false positives such as chewing, dropping, and throwing.

Provided are methods for the determination of the viability of a mammalian embryo or a potential embryo generated from a mammalian oocyte, comprising applying a mechanical stimulus to the embryo or oocyte, detecting a temporal response of the embryo or oocyte to the mechanical stimulus, and deriving measurements for one or more parameters from the temporal response, the measurements being indicative of viability.
