A method and apparatus are disclosed for using one device to configure information to be displayed on another device with different display capabilities. Techniques are described for receiving input on a management device, which specifies information for display on a target device. The management device generates an image of how the specified information will appear when displayed on the target device. Additional input may be received on the management device that changes the information to be displayed or the format of the information. The management device modifies the image to reflect such changes. The management device may display an image of the target device that includes the display of the selected information. The management device may also emulate the target device, thereby permitting a user to simulate physical use of the target device by manipulating the image of the target device on the management device.

Using one device to configure and emulate web site content to be displayed on another device

A system and method are provided for presenting a list of items to a user via a device having a limited display capability. In general, the number of items in the list may be much greater than the device can display at once. A list module is configured to receive a list of items and determine the number of items, or ranges of items, that may be displayed at once. If the list contains too many items to be displayed on one card, the list module divides them into groups nearly equal in size, so that to display any one item requires the same or nearly the same number of cards. Until each range is less than or equal to the number of items that can be displayed simultaneously, the list module presents (e.g., transmits to the device) cards having successively smaller ranges. Eventually a card will have few enough items to be displayed individually, and the user may make a final selection.

System and method for dynamically presenting a list of items

System and method for implementing selectively index enabled multi-column lists in a graphical user interface for a computer system. The graphical user interface contains a table of entries organized by columns. The columns are displayed vertically adjacent to one another. A user selectable vertical line (the divider line) can be moved from an extreme left column position to a position between adjacent columns. When a column is between the divider line and the extreme left column position, the column becomes index enabled. A single column (e.g., the left most column) or multiple columns can be index enabled simultaneously. A column can be positioned between the divider line and the extreme left column position by column reordering, e.g., leaving the divider line in a fixed position and dragging and dropping the column from a position right of the divider line. By making a column index enabled, an index of the items of the column is made and when indexed, every unique column item is represented only once in the column by an index item. A user selectable two position representation (e.g., a triangle, arrow, etc.) can be used to open (expand) or close the index item. When closed, all information contained within the index item is collapsed in the user interface. When expanded, this information can be displayed in the user interface. The present invention advantageously provides advantages of tree-views (e.g., the ease of searching through data in a hierarchical format) while also offering advantages of multi-column list displays (e.g., volume of information presentation).
