A magazine adapter includes a base that is structured to fit within the magazine well of a firearm, and to accept a magazine designed for smaller caliber ammunition than the original firearm. The adapter includes a bolt catch actuator slidably mounted therein. Magazines for which the adapter is intended include an upwardly extending rear projection of the follower, projecting from an opening in the rear of the magazine housing when the follower is in an upper portion of the magazine. When the upwardly extending projection pushes upward on the bolt catch actuator, the bolt catch is actuated, holding the firearms bolt in a rearward position. The magazine adapter thereby facilitates use of the original firearm controls with a caliber conversion unit, or with an upper receiver and barrel combination of a different caliber.

A protective carrier to hold a loaded spare magazine in a position of readiness for immediate insertion into operative engagement with a firearm. A latch release mechanism is operable wholly independent of the operation of the magazine release mechanism of the firearm, so that a spare magazine will remain in the protective carrier despite release of a magazine from the firearm. The spare magazine can be released from the carrier by pressing a latch release lever located for convenient use by either a left-handed or a right-handed rifleman.

An apparatus for placing an edge piece on a battery plate includes a feed mechanism which transports a strip of bendable plastic material. A bending mechanism forms this strip into an open top, U-shaped channel. A cutter cuts the channel into an edge piece having a length which is substantially equal to an edge of the battery plate which is to be covered. An in-feed conveyor transports a battery plate toward the edge piece, and a support mechanism supports the edge piece while the edge of the battery plate is inserted into it. The support mechanism then releases the edge piece so that it can travel out of the apparatus with the battery plate.

A method for placing an edge piece on a battery plate includes bending a thin strip of bendable plastic material into an open top, U-shaped channel. The channel is then cut into an edge piece having a length which is substantially equal to the edge of the battery plate which is to be covered. The edge piece is supported with this open top oriented towards a battery plate that is transported toward it in a manner such that the battery plate edge will be inserted into it. Once the edge of the battery plate has been inserted into the edge piece the edge piece is released so that the battery plate can be carried out of the apparatus. An apparatus for accomplishing this includes a feed mechanism which transports the strip of bendable plastic material. A bending mechanism forms this strip into the open top, U-shaped channel. The channel is then fully inserted into an assembly station where a first sensor stops the feed mechanism and a cutter cuts the channel into the proper-sized edge piece. An in-feed conveyor transports a battery plate toward the edge piece, and a support mechanism supports the edge piece while the edge of the battery plate is inserted into it. The support mechanism then releases the edge piece so that it can travel out of the insertion station with the battery plate. A second sensor restarts the feed mechanism once the battery plate is completely out of the assembly station.

A sling for carrying an elongate item such as a shoulder weapon having a buttstock and a forward end. In one embodiment, a bight of relatively small strap material is held in a sling swivel by a stopper mounted on the bight so that it can be passed through the sling swivel when the bight is slack, but which seats against the sling swivel when the bight is tight, keeping the bight engaged with the sling swivel. In another embodiment, a stopper keeps a bight of a stock-encircling strap engaged with a sling swivel, preventing the sling swivel from marring the stock.

A sling for a shoulder weapon, such as a military assault rifle or carbine, in which the effective length of the sling can be extended quickly and quietly and then easily and quietly retracted to the original length. A quick release plate and an engagement member cooperate to hold a loop of strap material to provide the shorter configuration of the sling, and the quick release plate can pass over the engagement member to lengthen the sling when the quick release plate is turned to a position perpendicular to the length of the sling. The opposite ends of the sling can be attached to a weapon using secure, quiet fittings.

A feeder for porous battery plates has a vacuum-operated pickup head that is positioned above the plates. The pickup head pulls the top plate off of the stack of plates and moves it to an outfeed device. The opening in the pickup head has an area that is at least 50% of the surface area of the plate. The air flow through the opening in the pickup head is at least 200 CFM and the vacuum at the pickup head is less than 7 inches of water.

An extender for a bolt catch release lever on a bolt catch operating lever of a firearm equipped with a protective spare magazine carrier for holding a loaded spare magazine in a position of readiness for immediate insertion into operative engagement with that firearm, and an integrated bolt catch and extended catch release lever. The extended bolt catch release lever places an engagement contact face of an outer end in a position accessible for easy operation of the bolt catch release mechanism of a rifle when the spare magazine carrier is in place.

Method of installing an edge piece on a battery plate and apparatus for performing same

A cartridge follower for pushing against cartridges in a tubular magazine of a shotgun. A front face of the follower has at least one forwardly protruding member offset from the center of the front face to be tactilely distinguished from a cartridge in the magazine, but which cannot contact a central primer of a backwards cartridge. A method for determining whether a shotgun is empty includes providing such a follower in the magazine, inserting a finger into the outfeed end of a magazine, and attempting to feel the protruding member.

A plate feed apparatus has a cylindrical pick-up head having a predetermined number of pick-up units. The pick-up head rotates with a first shaft at a first rotational speed. A feed mechanism places the uppermost plate in a stack of plates a nominal distance from the periphery of the pick-up head when a plate is removed from the stack. A vacuum is selectively drawn through each pick-up unit to pull the outermost plate into contact with the pick-up unit. A second shaft has a cylindrical bore which rotatably journals the first shaft and is offset from the centerline of the second shaft. The second shaft is rotated counter to the first shaft at a speed which is a multiple of the speed of the first shaft equal to the number of pick-up units. This causes the speed of the pick-up unit to be slower and its distance from the uppermost plate in the stack less each time a pick-up unit picks up a plate. The number of pick-up units and the diameter of the pick-up head are established relative to the size of the plates such that plates overlap one another on the pick-up head. An outfeed conveyer has a higher surface speed than the pick-up units so that the plates do not overlap on the outfeed conveyer. The feed mechanism places another stack of plates under the stack of plates before the stack becomes depleted.

A plate feed apparatus has a cylindrical pick-up head having a predetermined number of pick-up units spaced about its periphery. The pick-up head is attached to and rotates with a first shaft at a first rotational speed. A feed mechanism places the uppermost plate in a stack of plates a nominal distance from the periphery of the pick-up head each time a plate is removed from the stack. A vacuum device is selectively coupled to each pick-up unit as it passes over the stack to pull the outermost plate away from the stack and into contact with the pick-up unit. A second shaft has a cylindrical bore which rotatably journals the first shaft and is offset from the centerline of the second shaft. The second shaft is rotated counter to the first shaft at a speed which is a multiple of the speed of the first shaft equal to the number of pick-up units. This causes the speed of the pick-up unit to be slower and its distance from the uppermost plate in the stack less each time a pick-up unit picks up a plate. The feed mechanism has fingers which are inserted under the stack of plates before the stack becomes depleted to keep advancing the stack as plates are removed and allow the feed mechanism platform to be lowered to receive a new stack of plates. A microprocessor based controller directs this activity without disruption of the feed mechanism.

An improvement for retaining sling swivels on a firearm where web or narrow fabric is used in place of cord. Holes in an outer retaining piece and an inner cushioning piece can be of any shape. An extending projection may be used in the holes to conform the web or narrow fabric to the openings in the sling swivel. In another embodiment, a wire may be enclosed in a closed web loop. A tab, which is folded and stitched, is formed adjacent to an outer retaining piece.
