The present invention relates to a method to confer resistance or tolerance to more than one virus from the group consisting of furovirus, potyvirus, tospovirus, and cucomovirus, using sense and antisense RNA fragments of a sequence from their genomes. The sense and antisense RNA fragments are capable of pairing and forming a double-stranded RNA molecule, thereby reducing expression of the viral genome.

The invention relates to genes isolated from Arabidopsis that code for proteins essential for normal plant development. The invention also includes the methods of using these proteins to discover new herbicides, based on the essentiality of the genes for normal growth and development. The invention can also be used in a screening assay to identify inhibitors that are potential herbicides. The invention is also applied to the development of herbicide tolerant plants, plant tissues, plant seeds, and plant cells.

Herbicide target genes and methods

The present invention reveals that biotin biosynthesis in a plant is enhanced when the level of one or more of the enzymes in the plant biotin biosynthetic pathway is increased. Based upon this revelation, methods that increase the level of one or more biotin biosynthetic enzymes in plant tissue are provided as a means for achieving enhanced levels of biotin in plant tissue. In particular, a method is provided for enhancing biotin levels by introducing into plant tissue a chimeric gene capable of expressing a biotin biosynthetic enzyme such as biotin synthase. Thus, transgenic plant tissue, including whole plants, having enhanced levels of biotin is likewise provided.

Resulting transgenic plant tissue, including whole plants, having enhanced levels of biotin is also provided.
