An improved user interface is provided for displaying selectable software functionality controls and for presenting logical groupings of particular functionality controls associated with a selected top-level functionality. Underneath a row of top-level functionality tabs, functionalities controls associated with a given top-level functionality tab are presented in logical groupings. Selection of a particular tab switches modes of the user interface to present controls for functionalities associated with the selected tab.

An improved user interface is provided for displaying selectable software functionality controls that are relevant to a selected object and that remain visibly available for use while the selected object is being edited. Upon selection of a particular object for editing, functionality available for editing the object is presented in a ribbon-shaped user interface above the software application workspace to allow the user ready and efficient access to functionality needed for editing the selected object. The display of relevant functionality controls is persisted until the user dismisses the display, selects another top-level functionality control or selects another object for editing.

The present disclosure relates to processing operations that enable use of cache memory for content validation and error remediation of content. Functionality of the cache is extended to enable interfacing between a cache and a validation component, which is configured to validate data read directly from the cache. Corrupted content may be updated and propagated to a permanent data store associated with an application/service, system, etc. Use of the cache may be optimal for targeting recent and/or heavily accessed content as well as a means for offloading data processing operations from a permanent data storage. Examples described herein extend to those in which data associated with an electronic file is already stored in cache memory as well as those in which update occurs directly to a permanent data storage and subsequently forwarded for validation processing.

Methods, systems, and computer products are provided for exposing the programming of an application user interface to allow modification of the associated user interface to include adding, removing, disabling, enabling and repurposing new or existing user interface components.

Markup based extensibility for user interfaces

When a user interface of a parent software application is modified such that user interface components of an add-in application are not compatible with the parent application user interface, user interface components associated with functionalities of the add-in application are added to the modified parent application user interface. A prior user interface of the parent application to which the add-in application user interface components are added is run in a background of the parent application and is not visible to users. User interface components in the parent application user interface are linked to corresponding add-in application user interface components in the prior user interface. Selection of a user interface component from the present user interface that is associated with an add-in application functionality causes selection of a corresponding user interface component in the background user interface, and the associated add-in functionality is executed.

Cross version and cross product user interface

A method and system are provided for ensuring adequate contrast between colors used for graphical user interface elements. Pairs of colors for use in a given pair of graphical user interface elements are compared to determine whether a minimum required contrast exists between the colors. If a determination is made that the contrast between a given pair of colors is less than the minimum required contrast, one of the colors is designated as locked and the other color is designated as moveable. The moveable color is moved toward white or black to increase the relative brightness intensity and thereby increase the contrast between the moveable color and the locked color. Once the required minimum contrast is met or exceeded, the color pairing may be used for rendering a given graphical user interface element. After a color is designated as locked for a particular graphical user interface, that color for that interface remains locked when or if it is subsequently compared against a different graphical user interface element. After a color has been designated as moveable and has been moved to enhance contrast between two graphical user interface elements, that color for that graphical user interface element is locked from subsequent movement.
