Embodiments of a method of collecting a tail section of a long product, such as an optical fiber cable, are provided. In the method, a lead wire from a tail spool is unwound, and the lead wire is fed through a flange of a main spool. The tail spool and the main spool have a common rotation axis. The lead wire is attached to the long product. The tail spool is rotated while holding the main spool stationary so as to wind the lead wire and the tail section onto the tail spool. The rotation of the tail spool is stopped, and the main spool and the tail spool are rotated together so as to wind the long product onto the main spool. Also provided are embodiments of a winding apparatus using the tail spool and a tail reel that includes the tail spool and a drive mechanism.

Apparatus and method for winding tail section of optical fiber cable onto a spool

A method and device for continuously testing the tensile strength of an optical fiber, wherein the incoming optical fiber is wrapped at least partially around a payout capstan, to an intermediate payout pulley, at least partially around the intermediate payout pulley, and back to the payout capstan. The optical fiber is then wound from the payout capstan to a tensile testing measurement component, and then to an uptake capstan. The optical fiber is wrapped at least partially around the uptake capstan, to an intermediate uptake pulley, at least partially around the intermediate uptake pulley, and back to the uptake capstan. The payout capstan and uptake capstan are operated at a desired rotational speed to continuously advance the optical fiber for tensile strength testing.

A system for winding optical fiber onto a spool includes a spindle assembly for receiving the spool and rotating it around its longitudinal axis. A fiber source for providing a continuous supply of fiber to the spool is positioned relative to the spindle assembly such that rotation of the spool by the spindle assembly causes fiber to be wound onto the spool around its longitudinal axis. A tension sensing device senses and provides feedback related to the amount of tension in the fiber. A traverse assembly causes the fiber to wind onto the spool back and forth between a front spool flange and a rear spool flange, the traverse assembly including a front turnaround position at the front spool flange and a rear turnaround position at the rear spool flange. A controller receives the fiber tension feedback and uses the feedback to determine what adjustment, if any, is to be made to the front and rear turnaround positions.

A continuous length of fiber from a fiber supply is wound onto first and second sections of a spool by an apparatus and method that collect a first portion of the continuous length of fiber from the fiber supply, wind the collected first portion onto the first section of the spool, and wind a second portion of the continuous length of fiber onto the second section of the spool.
